First maintenance schedule

I've got a Suzuki Boulevard C50. It is due for its 500 mile maintenance. They told me everything that they do including inspecting the valves. My question is whether I need to get the valves inspected so soon? They quoted me a price of $395. Is that more than normal? Thanks in advance

There is an initial wear-in of parts, which is why you change the oil after 500 miles; valves may also seat in some, so they have to make sure they are still closing properly.
Cost depends on the market you are in.

From what I am told, on a lot of bikes they inspect and adjust the valves at this early stage, and then another interval anywhere between 7k and 12k (depending on the bike) and they can go tens of thousands of miles without needing another adjustment. But I believe it is fairly critical to make sure they are set properly early in life.

Motorcycling is expensive.

If they truly do a 500 Mile Service the way the Manual calls for it, $395.00 is not bad by a good competent Service Dept ..
