What type of costs are associated with a beginner street bike, new or used?

I am looking into getting one in a year or two (whats the minimum age) for some day-day use, but mostly just for fun when Im not driving grandma around in my volvo ;)...

I dont need anything SUPER fast, I heard about the Ninja 250 and 500...

Also I am getting into Street Luge so Ill have full racing leathers (two piece) and a DOT helmet already... Pretty nice because for most riding I could wear jeans the the leather jacket, or the full suit for longer drives!

I really like fast driving in the elements, I mean even going 70mph is enough thats enjoyable! But street luge and standup skating is just so hard to do because its tough to do on the streets :/ and events are scarse around here.

Rough estimates are $100 for a full faced helmet and another $100 for a decent armored jacket.

I meant for a bike ;)...

I am getting some leathers and helmet for luge right now, bike in a few years...

But what will a bike cost me (going to start saving up) and if used all the necessary costs to get it ready to ride... Oh and the class's etc...

I am going to get full body leathers (2 piece) and many of the standup skaters I know say if you search hard $150's shipped is possible... And for the helmet I have found a good deal or know of many others that I could use...

I just need to know about the bike itself, not the safety gear.
HAHA Ok. I bought my Ninja 500 new.I had to pay the price of the bike plus taxes, tags, freight, set up etc. If you are going used you still have to pay the tags and taxes. You'll need insurance too most likely to get tags, depending on your state. You can probably find a used Ninja 250 or 500 or an EX500 (same as the Ninja 500) for a decent price. Save up as much as you can then go from there. Don't break the bank just on buying the bike.

So I am pretty sure I can determine if a bike is in good condition and what not but how will I know if I am getting riped?

I mean what would be a good price for a used 250? Or a 500?

My Manager at work actually found a bike for a STEAL... $1600's, she said it was a ninja 750 (maybe she meant 650, havent seen a 750)...

So the EX is the same as a 500? I was initially thinking about the 250 but I am sure I'd be on the freeway a bit... But maybe a 250 is enough to get me into it, and threw my College career and then I can move on to a 500? Or a 750 or w/e... I dont really see myself needing any more then 500... I just want a bike then can get up to freeway speeds, is safe and wont kill the budget...

Ok here is the real question ;), if I start a Sports Bike savings fund today, how much would you say I should save up before I go for it (get the insurance going, get a bike, misc. accessories I dont yet have, tags etc....)?

Maybe 5,000? 6,000? Seems like a lot but ill be saving!!! :)... If I can convince the rents to let me get a bike permit maybe they will help me out a bit, most bikes are a lot cheaper then cars anyways... Which I already have :/

$5000 will buy you a brand spankin' new 250 all costs involved and pay the insurance full coverage for a year with some money left over I believe. If you save up say 5 grand you should be able to buy a real real nice used 500 that won't be any older than a few years old. The MSRP on the Ninja 500 is just around $5000. I looked at used Suzuki GS500's in my area and ones 1-2 years old they were right around $4000 or less. My advice is pick up a cycle trader or free ad papers that have bikes in them and start checking out what people are selling them for. That will give you a good idea how much to save. Don't overlook older models with decent milage on them, they will be much less. There are other bikes to consider.

yeah ok, first thing DOT isnt the helmet make, its company that inspects the helmets, and do NOT buy a 250 ninja, it may look fast but you will regret buying it when you try to pass a car, i have a 500 honda shadow and it runs around 2500$ but if your not into speed and your a bigginer i would realy recomend the honda cbr125, they run around 4000$ and come with maching gear and helmet for free, you can see them at honda.ca
Sad thing is they don't import them here. Come to think of it they don't import a lot of cool bikes to the States. Man, check out Japan's or Europes manufacturers pages. Kinda pisses me off we don't get some of them, like the one you mentioned.
G
Yeah meant DOT rated helmet ;)... I am aware its a certification not a brand...

Sounds like a used ninja 500 may be a good way to start... I mean with a new bike you know what its been threw (nothing) but with a used one it wont feel as bad if/when I drop it...

What other bikes should I be looking into?

I mean I am thinking this will be my main transportation for most of college so I want something I can learn on (like a Ninja 500) but still will be great fun for the next 4-5 years :)... I mean the smaller bikes will be fine for town travel but I will occasionally want to do a bit of highway driving...

Really my only requirements on the bike are that its a sportsbike (mostly a cosmetic thing, rather then the way it rides), its affordable, and it isnt to underpowered.
Look at ones like the Suzuki GS500 also. Really ya need to go out and start looking around. As far as Highway travel I have no problem cruising my 500 at 75 miles an hour if I need to.

That one looks nice...

$2000

Sounds like a killer deal...

I guess I just have to save up and then search for a few months...

I know somebody that got lucky and found a great condition ninja for $1600... She said it was a 750 but I dont think they make one... Perhaps she meant 650...

Anyways though...

Insurance is probably going to be the main bank killer
There is a 750 Ninja.
G
Oh well yeah she got a killer deal for a 750... $1600 bucks used but in good condition!

Just read a bunch of reviews on the Ninja 250... Seems to actually be a pretty fast bike no?

I am just under 5'10" and 160 pounds right now but obviously expect to gain a few more... But Im a pretty inshape guy...

Anyways, if I stick with the ninja should I really go for the 500? The 250 seems like it would be a great first bike and would last me a long while, light, cheap, still faster then most sports cars... And I wouldnt be tempted to push it...

Also is there just a 250R or a 250? One review talked about 250 only but I saw 250R (race?) in another...

I'd probably stick with a standard 250...

So what do you guys think? Will I really get that tired of it?

Where are you getting your helmets??? my Shoei Flutter was 500 after taxes!!!! and its the pretty one... my plain white Shoei was 400!!!!
G
cheap helmets

I know you can get a good bit of DOT rated helmtes for under $100's...

AFX has some... They are alright I hear, not the best but you get what you pay for. They will protect you just as well on a budget. I have tons of buddies that ride downhill skateboards, which I used to be involved in so I know a small bit about helmets and leathers, and use the snowmobile DOT rated model and its saved their lives... Now you may say thats skating and this is motorcycles but these guys fall head first at 50-60mph on the same roads we ride on, so its pretty similar...

Also a lot of guys I know get full 2 piece (or full body) racing leathers (very basic ones, motorcycle style pads in the leathers dont help us skaters) for $120-$150 shipped on ebay, just takes some shipping...

I have seen a good deal of jackets in that range on there.

But I am probably going to spend a bit more on my gear, atleast on the helmet (for comfort)
Also is there just a 250R or a 250? One review talked about 250 only but I saw 250R (race?) in another...
Same bike, different year.
i bought mine for $6K

i bought my 100% stock yamaha r6 1-year old at the time with 1700mi for $6000 (found it on craigslist)....
i had a bike mechanic inspect it for me for 75$
then i had to pay taxes+dmv fees+plates and thats it.....
of course i got a jacket, helmet, boots and riding pants especially that this been my 1st bike
