My old man has been a fully licensed heavy vehicle mechanic for my entire life. The thing about it is he's fifty now and can't keep up with the physical demands that come with working on heavy vehicles, buses in his case. He has suggested that he would like to begin working on motorcycles professionally but doesn't really know what he would need to do other than take the state test (michigan). So I figured I'd ask and see if anyone knows if he can just take the test, or if he would have to go back to school. He has worked on his own, and my, motorcycles since he was thirteen (his first bike was a 1970's Honda CB 350). I would like to know what else he would need to do other than take the test, if anything, or if being a master mechanic for 25 years qualifies him to just take the test. Ask me questions if I'm not clear on anything. I would really appreciate anything you guys could tell me, thanks.
