New to bikes and friend says there is some exhaust puffing out of my carburetor. Thinking it has something to do with gummed up carb or valves. Any opinions on what could be causing this?

If it is exhaust, it would be caused by the intake valve not closing properly. I would check the valve lash first.

Thanks! I forgot to mention it’s an 04 Shadow Aero that used to be my dads. It sat in the garage for 5 years before I enharated it last year. We cleaned the gas and put some new in last year to get it started. Then fired it up for pretty much the first time since last year with all new gas. Bike would die once choke was pushed back in.

The idle circuit in the carb is likely gummed up if it won't idle off choke.

We’re gonna clean up the carb tomorrow. Hoping that’s what it is. My friend is a Harley guy so if it’s valve lash he’s probably going want to send it somewhere because he’s never worked on a Honda. So hoping it’s nothing too difficult.
