I have this intermittent problem on my 2004 kawasaki VN250 eliminator that has been mechanically perfect up to this point. When you let the clutch out to engage first gear the engine dies. It does it with the choke on as well. It's definitely nothing to do with a cold engine and as I said the issue comes and goes.

Any ideas?

Check the safety switch on the kickstand; it may be reacting to the vibration, and making it appear that the stand is down.

Yeah I just worked it out. I am parked on an incline in tight motorcycle parking so was trying to put it into gear with the stand down. Feel like such a newbie
