I guess this is kinda computer related. I dl some movies and when I make a dvd from them I format them in AVI and they play on my computer and my DVD player fine but nobody else's player will read them. Sometimes I can get a kid movie that my niece or nephew would like to watch but I don't know what format to put it in. I googled for some info but a lot of it gets so technical I'm lost. Is there one certain format that's kind of a default for dvd players? Right now I'm using format factory to change formats.

There are a ton of different video formats. Try using Intervideo's WinDVD or DIV-X converter to turn them into the TS format. That makes two files - the audio and video. That should burn into the format dvd discs are generally issued in, which are universally playable, by region.
