Hello all im new to the forum. I learned to ride a motorcycle when I was 15, a 70's yamaha 250 cruiser in a sandpit. Needless to say I was bit buy the bug. When I was 17 I bought a ex ninja 500 rode it for a few years during college then last summer I traded it to a guy down the street for a speedboat. I am now ready for another bike and this is where my confusion begins. I was always told your bike should progress with you skill level so 250 to 500 and my thought was now im ready to go 750 or maybe 1000 cc but when I told the guys at work they told me I had a death wish and should only be looking at 600's. I feel like a 600 will get boring after a few months and I will wish I had got the gixer 750 or the R1 but I do not have a death wish and maybe there is something to be said about going from a ninja 500 to an R1. I just dont want to buy a new R6 or CBR 600RR and then turn around in a year and lose my shirt so I can Get an R1 any thoughts? to much rambling? apologies for the length and thanks for any answers ~Josh

It depends on several factors, including which one is comfortable for you, which one is in your price range, what kind of riding you're going to be doing, etc.

A regular commute would suggest a 600, always riding long distance would suggest a bigger one.

Agreed. I think it's been said countless times on this forum and I always concur, the throttle isn't what's dangerous; it's the hand turning the throttle.
Those guys who think you have a death wish evidently don't know much about motorcycles. There are many 600's that will run circles around my C90T, which is about 1500 cc's, over double the displacement of a 600. It's more the attitude of the driver than the size of the motor. If you have a tendancy to be a fool, then any bike will kill you. If you want a large displacement bike, then go for it. My feeling is, and I've said this many times in this forum, that you'll end up with a big bike eventually, so why waste the money trading up many times?
well thanks guys thats what I was hoping to hear I think Im just going to go for the Bigger cc and be done with it thanks for the help

A 600 sportbike is over 100 hp currently, you won't get bored with that. Going bigger in a crotch rocket will give you more acceleration but less handling, so unless you're into stoplight drag racing, there's no real reason to upgrade. Neither bike is going to be comfortable on long trips, so it's not like a cruiser where bigger is more comfortable. The only reason to buy an R1 over an R6 is ego, the average rider on the street will not be able to take advantage of the additional power of the bigger bike and will be slower in the curves.

The only way you'll get sporty and comfortable is a sport touring bike like a Concours 14, ST-1300 or FJR-1300.
Uesque - That was a great post and good points. When I tell people they don't need to buy a 250 or 500 cc for their first bike - I'm referring primarily to cruisers. Bigger is more comfortable when it comes to cruisers - especially for longer hauls and riding two up. Sport bikes are totally different animals.
