Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew about building choppers from a kit. Like, what kind of tools would be good to have around? Also what are some good places to purchase the kits from or what are some thing to watch out for?
Wow...can't believe that no one responded to your post by now.
All the major motorcycle distributors ie. Drag Specialties, Custom Chrome, Mid-USA, Mid-West, Bikers Choice and others used to have bikes in box or chopper kits available until Jan. 06. That's when the new Fed. Regs. came along under the EPA that basically said you can build one custom (motorcycle built from parts) bike in your lifetime and once done, you can't sell it for 5 yr.s. Since then, the market petered out, of course, while aftermarket engine Mfg.s did there level best to come up with a motor and driveline that would meet the new EPA requirements. A little late. So, you can still purchase rolling chassis from them and piece meal the other components from a laundry list of parts they sell. I believe the only company you can still get a "kit" from would be Pro-One. You pick your model, accessories and even the paint job from a menu of options. Talk to PK and see what he can to do for you. Your other option would be to contact a custom bike shop that has the experience to order up all the parts for you to assemble into a complete bike. Good luck and if you have any questions just let me know. I've been a custom builder for over 30 yrs. and might keep you pointed in the right direction.
