My baby has its original Cheng Shin tires,
and the rear is about used up. The front
doesn't have much wear at all. Should I
dump it while I'm replacing the rear with
a Pirelli Route 66?

Id say yes.

But not because of any performance issues....because it will give you a spare front if you ever get a nail or something.

Yes, especially if its the stock tire, Pirelli is a great brand, so is metzler for the price. You should be able to replace 2 back tires to 1 front tire after that.

Don't mix brands of tires. The flex of the tires is different even with the same manufacturer's lines of tires. Stay with the recommended pairs of tires.
Replacement with the same brand and line is fine if you need to replace the rear tire before the front.
