thanks, mine is an internal filter/cleaner not a screw on. haveing trouble getting the outer cover off with the exhaust on, can't get all the bolts out. is there a trick to do this. owners manuel only shows how to change the oil, not the filter. really don't want to remove the exhaust if it is not needed.

Yeah, you have a set up like a Virago. It is a pain in the ass to get the cover off. On mine I had to loosen the footpeg mount to get the cover the whole way off. Don't know what to tell you. If it takes cap screws (allen head bolts) a ball ended wrench might help.

relocation kit

yeah all vstar 1100s need to have their pipes taken off to change the oil filter but one of those oil filter relocation kits cost only about $400-$500 and if you let the dealer do alot of the serivce it can save you in a few years and it looks pretty sweet
