I was slowly cranking over the engine with the kick starter, then suddenly the engine wouldn't turn over. It turns over when I disconnected the cam chain, so it must be an issue in the top half of the engine.

The cam shaft will only turn 180 degrees each way; the lobes aren't getting past the rocker arms.

Thinking I could have possibly bent a valve. Any ideas?

It could be that the valve timing is incorrect, possibly 180 degrees off, leaving the valves open when the piston is at the top. If you didn't force anything too hard, the valves should still be ok.

Has this engine been apart before?

Like Dods said, verify your valve timing. If it doesn't turn with the cam chain on I guess the next thing would be to take a good look at the head/valves.
