Does anyone know of a problem where, as soon as you turm the key, the bike starts turning over, then starts without pushing ignition button. I have a 2000 Road King FLHRCI snd it started making a weird noise om my way home from work yesterday. I was coming down a steep grade hill and just barley throttling, and it made a sound like an air compressor when u turn it on, sounds like gush. Then this morning, i turned the key switch and it started by itself, and throughout the day riding, kept making that noise.

It might be one of two things, starter button's contacts got stuck in the closed position, or bad solenoid. If you shut the Engine
Run (ER) switch off then you get no ignition and no power can go to the engine start switch OR the starter solenoid which on a
Harley has a large solenoid mounted on top of or on the side of the starter could have gone bad.

When the starter button is thumbed, current goes through a powerful coil in the solenoid which pushes pinion gear of motor shaft out
to mesh in with the flywheel ring gear and at the same time, a heavy copper plate bridges current from BAT+ to the starter motor,
then a hold-in coil works to keep pinion gear meshed with flywheel gear, an over-running clutch separates engine from starter when
the engine fires.

I have the service manual for the Sportster that gives a lot of info on testing the solenoid.

I forgot to mention when i first posted that, i was riding home from work and i smelled and electrical burn smell. The next day, i rode to work and thats when the problem started. As soon as i turned the key on my 2000 Harley Road King it started turning over and started, then the starter sounded as if it keeps trying to engage. Does anyone know what this could be?
