Im assuming we are talking about a 650 VStar.

new battery for sure

oil change for sure....not sure the "again in 200 miles" is necessary but it definitely isnt going to hurt anything

drain tank, replace or install inline fuel filter

the carbs are most likely going to need cleaned

check the tires and all rubber hose (brake) for dry rotting - I doubt your going to find that on the rubber lines but you might be surprise on the tires - doesnt take that long sometimes

make sure the exhaust is clear (no rats nests)

might not hurt to toss a couple new plugs in it

Other then that the only thing to know is that the 650 VStar are notorious for improperly lubricated rear splines in the drive shaft. Might not hurt to take it apart and lube it up proper before you start putting serious miles on it. My bike only had 6K miles on it when I took it apart the first time to check......improperly lubed from the factory, looked like it had 60K miles of wear on it.

You forgot something very important here. How much is he asking/are you offering? That will tell us whether or not this is even worth the hassle.

 +1 Future brother in law bought a used 06 V-star off a guy. The guy bought it in 06, had customer pipes put on, aftermarket solo seat, custom bars, lowered it, and a aftermarket air cleaner on it. The guy put 227 ish miles on it in one year then parked it. WTF right, the guy was a moron, he was selling a 650 V-star, I went to look at it with him and informed THE OWNER it was an 1100, what a moron. Anywho, my soon to be brother in law bought it, no shock, it ran like ****.

We pulled the carbs, cleaned em, jetted em for the pipes and breather then sinc'd the carbs.

Drained the tank and push fresh gas in it.

Did an oil change, I showed him how to do the PITA V-star oil change, then 300 miles later he did another one.

Changed the plugs.

changed the tires

Changed the rear gear oil for the shaft.

set a proper idle RPM.

Checked to make sure the brakes were worth a ****.

Now the bike runs like a top and he got a **** nice bike, for a **** nice price...I was slightly jealous of his deal. I told him the aftermarket breather was bad for the bike and being a nice guy I offered to give him my stock breather and take the risk with the after market one....I wasn't able to sucker him LOL.

He got his V-star from ol boy for 4K.
Then he got hosed...

In that condition (needing some repair to be road ready) it would be considered low retail, which would be $2030 NADA value.

Even average retail would $2630....which definitely isnt applicable for a bike thats been setting for 3 years....so at $4K you flat got screwed.

For example I sold a 2007 VStar Custom Midnight recently. The bike had Vance and Hines pipes and side mount plate but otherwise was stock. Had 7K miles and no damage, not even a ding or scrape. I tried like hell to get $3800 out of it and couldnt.....finally sold for $3000. This bike needed nothing but a rider.....no hassle, just ride.

Here it was on its last ride before the new owner took it.

Heck three years ago I bought my 2001 VStar Classic with 5K miles on it for $2400 cash.....and it had NEW tires on it.

These bikes are good bikes.....but they dont demand top dollar.

Ive seen NEW VStar 650s on the floor sell for under $5K.

Here is a brand new, no miles 09 on eBay for $4550.....plastic on the seat, full warranty.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2009...9352177?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item19bf0b0271

.....and Ive seen similar deals in my area several times.

I think he spent around 200 on the tires the rest of that was all provided, well I guess adding the cost of oil. The guy had a the jet kit, just never did it. If you were to take that bike to a shop and pay labor on it yeah he would have been in way over his head. But to get a used bike with only 250 miles on it, not a horrible deal in my opinion. I still couldn't believe you couldn't move your GF's V-star at 3800. PS, this was before you were selling yours, or I would have sent him your way, especially at 3k.

PS still a better deal than I got on mine. 8,500 brand new.....I'll probably never buy a brand new bike ever again, especially not a metric. Ohh well, if you're not smart you gatta be dumb at least once to get smart.

Yeah $8500 is pretty steep....did you get some kind of extras like extended warranty to inflate the price?

Im still of the opinion that $4K is to much.....but as long as hes happy with it.

In the Des Moines Craiglist right now there is 09 black custom, 0 miles, full warranty at $4399.

....and quite a few 06s and 07s at around $3200 to $3800.

That 03 was a $2500 bike in running condition......no way its worth $4000 - and thats not an opinion so much as fact....run it thru NADA and KBB....it doesnt add up.

.....but like I said, as long as hes happy.

Wait....are you talking about your brother in laws 1100?....or the posters 650?

An 06 1100 is worth $4k......a 03 650 isnt.

I think Im mixed up here.

Ohh and no, I got the standard one year warranty, I got fist ****ed all around. Problem was it was the first bike I have owned, and I fell in love with a bike before doing research and just went to the dealer. Then the little sales guy comes a running. Ohh yeah those babies are 9500, but for the next 2 weeks we got em 1000 off, 4% financing. I was sold, sweet a bike I can afford, plus 1 K off, **** were do I sign. I must have missed hm mumble under his breath 4% for 2 years then 22%, causing you to break the bank if you ever want to get out from under it because in 2 years you'll be lucky to get 3 k out of it if you do any real riding. LOL, I guess what those guys south of I-80 say about us guys north of I-80 is true. Ya live ya learn, I saw that 22% intrest, scream WTF and pulled most all of my savings to pay it off. I don't like paying 195 bucks to intrest and 5 bucks towards the actual money owed.

Yeah $4K is a good price for an 1100.....good score.

A 1 year warranty....that blows. The last bike I bought (#10) was the first "new" bike Ive ever bought. I researched my ass off......called all over gods creation for 2 weeks.......worked my own financing (which was 5% for 5 years)........THEN went in to buy. Ended up getting another $500 off at the last moment when I found an online coupon....

$16,200 for a Victory Vision......those bikes are $22K.

.....not that Im a great dealer or anything, Im just to broke to afford $22K so something had to be done.

If I was in the position to pay full price I may have saved myself all that trouble......maybe not.

At any rate, I cant believe Yamaha only warranties there bikes for 1 year....hell I think Honda does 3 years. My Victory has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty.

Yep as of 07 it's a 1 year, they offer YES for more $ but I know my way around a toolbox so I opted out. Figured if the bike had a major defect it would work its way out in a year and the minor things I could work on. Glad I opted out because I haven't had to turn 1 wrench on my bike other than maintenance.

I'm hoping within the next few years for my next cruiser to be a victory. I have had my eye on the kingpin for a while but am thinking the cross country would suit me better. Maybe I'll get lucky and find me a demo model with a full warantee like you did come time I am ready to splurge on a new bike.
