Hey guys, I'm looking to get my first bike in the late summer/early fall of this year. I'm taking a motorcycle safety course at a local community college here in Charlotte over the summer. A little background: I'm 25 and did a little bmx racing when I was young and rode dirt bikes for a year or so(totally different, I know, but I'm not totally green to bikes). I'm 5'8" and weigh about 175lb lean. I don't plan on taking the bike to the track, but I will use it for commuting around town (school and work) and I do plan on some long rides up to the mountains every now and then.

With all that said, I've been looking at used bikes around the 2000 model year in the 600cc class. Right now I'm leaning towards the yamaha R6 or the suzuki gsx-r 600. With all the stuff above, what do you guys think? Are there others I should consider? I really like the way the R6 looks and I've read great stuff about it, but I figured I'd ask all of you guys, the experts.

Sorry, I'm having trouble trying to post. Anyway, thanks Adrian. From what I've read lately, I think that I'm gonna go with the suzuki. I think that the r6 is a great bike when pushed hard, but I don't think that I need to be pushing any bike hard for the first year or so. The gixxer, from what I've read, is a little more forgiving and has more midrange power, which is where I plan on keeping the tach most of the time. Thoughts?
