Advice on restoring and modifying a 2005 piaggio Nrg

Evening, I’m after some tips , my daughter is 16 and riding a 2021 symjet 14 50cc , it’s a fantastic moped for her in every way bar the performance, it takes around 30 seconds to get near 30mph, I don’t trust it pulling out of junctions as so gutless , cars understandably get frustrated stuck behind her so Ive bought a late 2005 air cooled NRG 50 mc3

I am not a scooter fan, I ride a Ducati but kids have to start somewhere lol

so this NRG is tired, I’m going to strip and rebuild the whole bike , I know I will attract comments such as “legally she can’t go over 30” or “wait til 17 and get a 125, she’s only just 16 so got nearly a year for that , so 50 is only option for now

I bought this NRG for £100 so don’t mind spending a few quid to get it decent, it does start but needs exhaust and some other minor repairs to get up to a rideable standard , do these rspond ok to tuning, I’ve heard variator, rollers , rejet etc but what are the easiest ways to get a little better acceleration, and 40mph plus would be good .

ps, I’m a mechanical engineer in the big diesel industry so no issue doing the work but my knowledge is not great on mopeds

These things were pretty gutless from factory. if you want to bump up output, it's same hot-rodding path with most gains starting from inside using big-bore high-compression pistons. Causes cascading list of required supporting mods: forged con-rods, larger valves, porting head, custom exhaust, ECU dyno-tuning, etc.

Personally I would do engine-swap as that's most bang-for-buck upgrade for least amount of effort. A Vespa 50cc 2T engine would pretty much double output and be satisfyingly quick. There's HUGE market in modifying and boosting Vespas, and they can get up to 200kph!!! :eek:
