I have a 81 Yamaha XS400 Special. What should the valves be adjusted too with the feeler gauge.

Thanks

The rule of thumb is around .003" intake and around .005" exaust. I don't know the spec off-hand but there may be a sticker tellin' you what it is on the bike, usually under the seat on older bikes. If not any decent Yamaha dealer can tell ya the spec. For real you should get the exact spec and only check it with the engine stone cold like after it has been sittin' overnight. A little loose is ok but tight isn't good and can cause damage.
Some new bikes ya don't have to if they have a hydraulic valvetrain. Most bike however at the very least need to be checked every so often. The ones with the adjuster on the rocker arm need to be checked more often than shim on bucket type valvetrains.
My brother and I just purchased new bikes. A Yamaha YZF-R6 and a Suzuki GSXR 750. Both bikes require a valve adjustment at 2400 miles. At least that's what was told. However, my 03 GSXR 600 needed one at 600 miles.

i hurd u dont have to adjust valves on new bikes
