Recently I completed a 9000 mile, 2X across USA solo tour. Alas, the gearbox managed to leak all its oil out, which was compounded by the fact that inexperienced me misdiagnosed the first blatant symptom (slipping out of gear in 1st only) as a worn clutch. By the time correct diagnosis was made, it was 9PM on 7/3/07, in the middle of west TX, and a rebulid was obvoiusly needed. Rather than spend the 4th by the side of the road, I figured, "heck, the damage's been done already, let's see if the hole can be patched up and get me home." That it did before quitting completely on me just after arrival.
My honda shop quoted me $1500--parts only--for the gears and suggested that I get a used mill from a wrecked 250 and then it'd be a fairly simple "parts swap" vs rebulid.
1. Is this correct advice? How easy is it to find a working engine and tranny on a junked 250 Nighthawk? Would it be easier all around to just spend another $1500 on another used 250?
2. Obv. swapping a 4-cyl for the 2-cyl would be a major PITA, but would the 2-cyl 450cc more or less just bolt into place? At present, that would seem to be the ideal eng. size for me.
