Looks like I'm about to pick up my first sport bike. $200 for a good-running, ugly plastics 92 Ninja 500. I'll post pics when I get the bike home.

Cool. It's about the same bike I have with the exception of a few things. http://www.ninja500r.info/ Stuff is fairly cheap and plentiful for them
I have the bike now, it actually runs fine. Only problem is with the upper gears. 4 is tough to get into (but doable), while 5 and 6 (assuming it's a 6-speed) is not available. Clutch works great in lower gears. Any suggestions as to what I should look at? It'll run 55mph with 4 gears, but I'd like to get it going faster. Also, anyone know a good place to get tires? The rear tire is a slick.

As I mentioned, this is my first sport bike. I was rather surprised how comfortable it was to ride.
Honestly, my Ninja is more comfortable to me than my Virago ever was. 300 miles are not a problem. They are a 6 speed, wish I knew what to tell you how to make it shift easier. Does it have the 16" tires or the 17's? I just hunt around on the net myself.
I'm thinking the actuating rod is bent or worn. I just didn't want to open it up. Mine has the 16-inch tires, whereas most tires I've seen are 17-inchers. I'll probably pick up a set from Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse, that's where I picked up my tires for my CB350. Arrived taped together via FedEx, and the driver asked what was in the package (he was kidding).

Glad it's a 6-speed, as the low end was short with a lot of torque. Looks like the previous owner took good care of the bike, the oil is new and the chain looks like it was recently replaced.
The 500's really come alive above 7000 RPM.:D
Pics coming after I find my adapter for the digital data card.

7K RPMs, eh? I was keeping it at 4K, but it seemed a bit torque-y, as though it was annoyed I shifted so soon. I'll go tell her I've learned better :)
Mine at and under under 3000 is fairly dead. At 4 grand you're still a good bit under the torque peak but it will pull fairly decent. Run it up to redline in like 2nd or 3rd, you'll feel it really come on around 7000 RPM. The torque peak is at 7750 RPM. The horsepower peak comes on a bit later at 9250 according to the link I posted for you.
I'm looking at a '92 Ninja EX500, and I've just started looking at Ninja's in general. Could anyone give me some advice on any common problems or defects they've noticed for the bikes? I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I actually go see the bike, so if you have any tips or suggestions for me I'd really appreciate it.
Not sure what the board ettiquette is for posting links to other message boards. But for all my ninja questions (I have a 2002) I head over to http://www.ex-500.com/

Search around - threads on everything.

That's true. I got all my little tips for mine off there.
