I'm needing to replace the exhaust on my 1980 xs850 Special due to finding a quite large gash on the pipe coming from the middle cylinder.

I have a factory manual, which I've found is very good and telling you what needs to be done, but doesn't do such a good job at telling you 'how' to do it.

Are there any 'gotchas' I need to look out for when replacing the pipes?

I have a parts bike of the same year and model which I'm going to pull the pipes off of.

The stud should stay in. But if they do not, return them to the same hole. Sometimes the allen head nut can be removed, with the stud in the vice. I have two on an XS1100 that come out. You do not want to bugger up the thread in the head.
