1990 FZR600 shifts between 1st and 2nd only!

The bike only switches between 1st and 2nd. When I try going into third it acts as if it is in neutral and is really hard to get back into second. Also, when I am in second gear you can hear a tapping noise (Maybe unrelated it's pretty quiet). I asked a local mechanic and he sad it is probably the "shift detent". I'm not sure if he is right or not. Any suggestions or comments???:confused:

He sounds right. Sounds like something came loose in the trans unfortunatly.

He's right...

Could be the shift detent, or a bent shift fork. You don't want to do either.

Well I am going to try checking out the detent first. Does anyone know how to tell if it is bad or not?

Hey dont even check the detent im sure its either the drum or fork. you maybe lost a circlip I dont know it could happen. pull the egnine split the case take it apart piece by piece if a fzr is a kawa they have a great manual online well parts diagrapm. But that just my say
