My shifter on my 1981 Yamaha sr250 is loose. Not the shifter pedal but the shaft and I'm having trouble getting it into 1st gear because of the play. I'd like to have an idea of what to look for before I open it up to look. I really can't afford to pay someone to fix it or get another bike until the VA gets my pension straightened out so I have to do it myself.

The shaft is not loose. but the shifter has a lot of up and down movement so that I have to play with it to get it in 1st gear.

Is it the correct shift lever?
The longer a lever is, the more distance it travels at the end of its length.

Picture a 5-foot long shift lever . . . the tip would have to move about a foot or more to shift it into gear. While a 2 inch-long shift lever would only move about 1/2 inch to do the same job.
