On the 1980 Yamaha GT80 in which position should the lever be to turn the choke on? Mine will only run in the down position which lifts the little plunger inside the carb. When i lift the lever up, it dies out. It starts cold with the lever down, which I assume would be choking it. But it runs perfect with in that position. So that is why I am not sure of which position the lever should be in to have the choke off.

On all of my two-strokes, the choke is "on" when the little plunger is raised up. Usually that happens when you push the choke lever down.

If the engine will not run when the choke is off, then it is not getting a rich enough gas mixture. That would lead me to believe the carb just needs a thorough cleaning . . . especially all the tiny ports and tubes inside of it.

When you take it apart just visually inspect all the parts very carefully and note anything that looks unusually worn or dirty. They are simple devices so go for it! Good luck.
