It depends on how hard they looked. The tags would have to match the VIN number, so if they checked the VIN there could be consequences.

Depends on the question you're asking. If you're getting a moped tag issued to a 125cc? That's legal (if your state does stuff like that), though know if you ride on roads faster than like 35mph, the police can pull you over.
A moped tag from another vehicle? You'll get away with it so long as the officer doesn't think twice about what is on their computer screen. I've been stopped for no plates once, was let off with a warning because I at least had a valid registration.
If your issue is with licensing, depending on where you live, a MSF course is cheap! It's free in my state.

I need more input. What is the make and model of the two wheeled unit? Does it have pedals? Where are you? What are the rules wherever you are?Would cops really know the difference??
If you draw attention to yourself by your riding actions, you will get stopped and checked.

Right now I have a 50cc Jonway rocket, chrome which looks like a actual bike to begin with. It does top out at 49mph for some crazy reason downhill on a tuck. And I’ve never once got pulled over or second guessed. I’m now about to buy a 125cc Icebear Fuerza which is a grom clone. It should also top out around 50 but without the pain of going uphill at 30-35mph.. I’m in the state of North Carolina. I do not have my motorcycle endorsement, even a drivers license.. so I planned on simply taking the tag off my Jonway rocket and putting it on the 125cc and no, I don’t plan on taking any interstates.
You can't legally ride it unless it has operating pedals and an engine of less than 50cc. North Carolina.
I wonder how much the fines for riding without a license and impound fees are in North Carolina. Let us know when you find out.

Just went to 2 different shops including Kevin Powell, Charlotte scooter shop and called a place in SC close to me and they all have told me 90% of their customers with 125’s and 150’s all slap a moped tag on it and never get bothered. So, end of story, I’m going for it.
By all means, go for it. Maybe you won't ever get stopped by the cops. You rebel, you.

There are far more accidents on local roads than the interstates.

My Buell got impounded on the very first night that I rode it (accidentally left my docs at home in my bigger purse and the Sec of State systems still read me not having an endorsement). I happened to get stopped in a really really strict town that decided to impound my bike because I couldn't prove I had a license. It was only there for 1 day, yet it still cost $770 to get out. I fought the tickets in court and won. The town would have had to give back $400 of the impound fee if the judge determined that the police didn't follow procedure. They followed procedure to the letter, so they got to keep the cash.
My $770 lesson: Never leave home without your docs!
Side note: This town also impounds motorcycles for exhausts that can be heard from 75 feet away. The impound lot was full of choppers, dirt bikes, and sport bikes all impounded for such reason.

Well,Mr. ScootLife, i would say that 10% is a pretty high catch rate. I let my plates expire and it was $200. No plates and no license could be expensive. The way the math works out, the state is not losing a dime.
