Hey, saw a message you posted about your 81 XV920 and wondered if you have ever done the shim fix for the starter. I found a technical bulletin about this problem with some instructions about how to install some shims into the starter to supposedly alleviate the 'rocks in a box' noise. Please share your experiences with this. I just bought the bike and eliminating that horrible noise is my first order of business.
