Default getting worried about this country

I was just making a frozen pizza and now I am starting to worry about what is this country coming to. It use to be the only two directions on a frozen pizza was the oven temp. and the time to bake. Now they have to tell you to cook it before you eat it, and to take it out of the plastic wrapper before you bake it. Is our country really getting that bad. Is common sense a thing of the past. How are these people going to take care of us when we are old. And they get a license to drive. Thats kind of scary when you think about it, Are they told not to hit that shiny thing on two wheels?
And another thing.
At my job we use temp labor, some of the young people that come in can't read a tape measure. They told me they graduated from High School. Now I know not all young people are like this but.
Sorry just had to vent
Thanks for space

Old news on stupid instructions like a pizza, a little logic behind it though. All it takes is one moron to file a lawsuit over something like that, otherwise there would be no warning labels whatsoever. Its as simple as that, the instructions wouldn't be there unless someone did it. Thats mankind for you.

I have to agree with rex, It's not that people don't have common sense, well some don't.. but it is the fact that this country has become sue happy, and every time they have a problem they turn to their lawyer instead of talking things threw. And another reason is because this country has become an ego country, everyone is God's gift in America.....

Basically, it is the dumbing down of Americans.
You are told that you have to wear seat belt, you have to have abs brakes, you must have a crumple zone, etc.
What ever happened to simply knowing how to drive and avoiding an accident?
Just watch TV commercials, you have to have a scented house and even trash bags!
What ever happened to cleaning?
You are told that you have to take antacids or beno before eating, etc.
What ever happened to eating right?
The list could go on forever...

People are trained to be STUPID!

I have no problems with extra safety features, although abs brakes do **** me off sometimes... You can't make someone spill a drink all over themselves with abs brakes very easily

Driver's licenses are handed out like candy anymore, my brother failed his test twice and I thought maybe they were getting tougher... then I rode with him a few times...

It's scary how bad you can be at driving and still get a license. I started driving before I was even old enough to get a permit, only in parking lots in the small town my grandma lived in, but once I got my permit I drove everyday with my parents until I could get my license so I probably had 200+ hours of supervised driving before I even went to take the test (and the only thing I got knocked for was not using a turn signal in the parking lot to pull into a parking stall, wtf?).

yes, common sense is almost completely gone, as is common decency and common courtesy...well maybe not almost gone, but not very common anymore

I think, in general, people are pretty dumb. However, I don't think this is just a recent history thing. There have always been dumb people.

We have in many ways become the blameless society. It's always the "other guy's" fault.

"Yes I stole from that store, but it's their fault because they didn't try hard enough to stop me."

Yes, I took bribes from corporations, but so did all the other congressmen."

"Yes, we are spending the US economy into an unrecoverable tailspin, but so did the last administration."

"Yes I was speeding, but the guy in front of me was going too slow and made me angry."

The excuses for bad behavior and plain stupidity are getting pretty ridiculous. I think we would be much better off if people started taking personal responsibility and helping themselves live a better life to the best of their abilities than waiting for the other guy to take responsibility for them.

Well,I cannot argue with you there. have you ever taken a look at a box of toothpicks? YES! Toothpicks come with directions as well now. They also come with a warning to NOT attempt to hold your eyes open with them. It's pretty sad when we have to warn people that the world is not the Tom-n'-Jerryverse. also, I would think that most people are smart enough to NOT stuck their hands under a running lawnmower.

Oh, Goliath, if Commen Sense was common, then everyone would use it...

Thank your liability attorneys. If there's one word out of place, a law suit is in order. Bell helmets once got included in a law suit because the injured party who was wearing a helmet figured he had the best, Bell was the best, so it had to be a Bell - they had no idea what brand it was.

Take a look at a ladder it's virtually entirely covered with stickers, 95% are dealing with liabilities. Pretty soon the attorneys will be responsible for all products coming with a CD to explain how to use the product.

I don't know if there should be caps on liability awards, but I think there should be penalties against litigators when there are foolish suits filed or when parties that have no reasonable reason to be included are included. That might cut some of the crap suits. But I guess since most politicians are either lawyers or really close to lawyers, it'll never happen. Even those who call for tort reform always vote against any legislation.

It just comes down to a lack of upbringing and common sense!

Schools are now going to teach an additional curriculum...on social skills....
When parents send their children to school without proper clothing and hygiene ....you have got to wonder how many generations this has been spanning....a five year old doesn't know how to use the bathroom yet?

There is no raising of the young in some areas...after some parents give birth...they essentially tell the child ... you are on your own...I am not going to clean up after you ... This has been happening in the inner city now for decades.... so sad...

Did you know that they build prisons based on the reading scores of children? So if they are not being taught their colors, simple words, read to at night, conversed with on a regular basis at home...they cannot read when they come to school....because they cannot recognize simple everyday objects.

Children placed in Ohio from Burma, as refugees, are learning at a faster rate in the public school systems than those children born and raised in the US!

I taught a couple of years at a trades high school and noticed how the kids could not read a tape measure. When I realized how they were 'taught ' how to read the thing by remembering the pictures of slicing a pie and all that, it was no wonder it did not work. Then I thought how I read a tape, and it became apparent that I know instantly what 1/16th division comes before each 1/2,1/4, and 1/8th of an inch. It became apparent that at some point that I had memorized the thing.
I then announced to the class that they would be responsible to learn this completely boring paper that I was about to distribute and that most importantly that they would be expected to repeat it forward and backward. When I announced that the test would be verbal, timed, and repeated and graded the entire year, the groans erupted from some in the class. I then quickly recited the sixteenths scale, forward and backward, and then asked if that seemed like showing off? It sure did. Then I attempted to recite the 1/32nd scale, and the class got a chance to laugh at my attempt.
I knew that i had them then, because the standard for the test was to get an A, you had to match my 32nd scale time[to be determined in 2 weeks as I learned it] with your 16th scale time, forward and backward. Also, I had to maintain my time of about 25 seconds each way for the 32nd scale before I tested their times. Worked like a charm, and the students actually taught some of their buddies in the other trades how to read a tape measure. I will never forget when one of the 'slow' kids actually thanked me for teaching him how to read a tape, because it really worried him how he was going to be able to do it when he got hired by a contractor.
I guess that at some point in the science of education, it became important to "understand" how a tape measure worked instead of how to read the darn thing.Memorizing stuff was so 50 years ago. If I were you ,Joe, I would make up the chart and tell the new hires that reading a tape in _____ days was a condition of employment. For all you know, you could actually score some points with your boss on this one.
Actually,I wonder how one does not read a tape that actually has the fractions printed right beside the scale graduations. I call those "cheater scales'"

Some of my favorite idiot-proofing items:

Brakes on lawnmower blades so it'll have stopped spinning by the time you can get your hand off the handle and under the mower. Brilliant!

Brakes on washing machine tubs so it'll have stopped spinning before you can prop the lid open and stick your hand down inside and get your arm ripped off. Brilliant!

Gripper jaws on the necks of spray bottles so you can't remove the spray nozzle and drink straight from the bottle. (Only reason I can think of that they don't want you removing the spray nozzle). Brilliant!

The Polyester tag stuck to the hairdryer cord warning you not to use it in the bathtub or shower. Brilliant!

The label on the side of the huge plastic moisture absorber inside my pill bottle warning me "Do Not Eat!". Brilliant!

This is clearly a country of dummies, because if it wasn't, none of the above would exist.

I can see the majority of these warnings being derived from the following circumstances:

College kid is in college and loves having friends.
College kid drinks to impress friends.
Friends think college kid is a wuss.
College kid does something that everyone knows is very stupid and dangerous to prove that he is a man!
College kid ends up in the hospital.
College kid has to explain to his parents/doctor what happened.
College kid says he didn't know stupid act was indeed stupid.
Lawsuit takes place.
???
PROFIT!

It's all a continuation of the liberal entitlement atitude. If you get hurt (even doing something you KNOW is stupid/dangerous) you are "entitled" to get paid for your pain/suffering. If you even have an idea of how to work the system for profit/personal gain, you are "entitled" to those gains/profits.
IMHO one solution wich may help in a small way is to enact a law wich would require anyone who brings a frivalous lawsuit against another to pay both sides legal costs if the plaintiff loses.

When I was doing drywall work, 30 years ago, I remember seeing the first picture of a small child standing next to
a bucket with the word "Aviso!" and a bunch of other stuff, only in Spanish, on the side of a 5 gallon bucket of drywall mud!
I thought to myself that some stupid idiot, must have let their child fall into a bucket and sued!
Apparently, they spoke Spanish as it was NOT in English.

This Country is screwed!

It's not just our country man... I work at a college as a research/ teacher assistant, and I was using the CNC machine and teaching one of the foreign students how to use it. I just caught my thumb on a nasty burr, so I was bleeding a bit, and I handed the ratchet to one of the kids to start to take the machine vise apart while I used the first aide kit. Not one of them had ANY idea how to use a ratchet. These are kids with a degree in mechanical engineering.

I really don't quite see that one as idiot proofing totally. If one should slip while mowing it wouldn't be one's fault to have a foot go under the deck now would it? Same with the seat switch on riders, should something happen. Sure, idiots might reach underneath to unclog a running mower, but that isn't the case with some actual accidental slip while pulling back on one.
