Default help with starting issue!!!!

i am on this forum for my harley and get good info, so my buddy wanted me ask you guys something about his sportbike and i am hoping i get the same good answers and info. he just got a 94 secaII from his father-in-law and it hasn't ran for several years. we tinkered with it, cleaned the tank, replaced some lines and hoses and got it running. problem is when you go and try to start it for the first time of the day it starts breifly, dies and then wont start again with out spraying ether into the aircleaner. once you do this and get it ideling for a few minutes then it is fine and will start time after time easily. so any ideas on what the problem is and why it wont just start and stay running the first time we try it. thanks for any help guys

I'd suspect the choke and idle circuit in the carbs. Dismantle and clean with carb cleaner and compressed air.

definitely go through the carbs, check the air filter, fuel filter, and I am assuming you replaced the battery?
