I got this bike around 2 months ago from a friend (first bike). It ran great drove it alot, no problems.
I decided to clean the carbs. Now I have two issues: 1. The choke seems to work in reverse and doesn't work anywhere close to what it used to. 2. While riding the bike around 30% on the throttle seems "bogged" down and then it will pick up acceleration. |

Did you rebuild them or just clean them? What did you use to clean them? A lot of carb cleaners are bad for o-rings. Did you check cables and settings for idle screws and jets? I would also make sure you have the carbs seated right in the manifolds.

I cleaned them, I am sorry I didn't save the can, it was a it said either throttle cleaner or carb cleaner picked it up at auto zone.
My choke cable seems loose. I have tried to adjust it tighter and looser and still doesn't make a difference. The manual says that the initial pilot is 2 1/4 turns out. I did that in both carbs. With the jets i tighted them down didn't see that I needed to have them at a certain setting. The carbs seem to be on correctly and tighted on to air box and the other end. |

Your motorcycle probably has the kehein carburators on it the slides are on the top of the carbs. Theres two screws holding the caps on the top of the carburators. Under the caps there are piston type slides. They need to move up and down freely inside the caps. Maybe durring your cleaning they got jambed halfway. Which explains why your choke seems to run in reverse. The slides are stuck half way giving too much air. you choke it , restricting the air flow. bike seems to work ok. But theres a lag when you gas it. because the rpms of the engine have to catch up to where the slides are jambed. Then the bike runs good on up from there.. The slides dont go down all the way is the problem. Try this, Take intake boots off intake of carburators. With engine off put your fingers in the open intakes of the carbs. If you can feel where the slides are past the chock disks. Push the slides up into the caps.
All the way. Then let them down. They should come all the way down, smoothly. So , just your finger tip can feel the opening under it. Both carbs should work the same. Free up your slides. Hope this helps. |

If your slides are not jamed.
Did you change the pilot screws to adjust them from this 2 1/4 point? That point is the start point to get the bike to run so you can adjust the the setting properly it is way rich in most cases.

Handling a carberator not over a bench and just standing in the middle of the garage. The carburators slipped out of my hand and fell on the ground.
The caps that hold the slides hit the concrete and becamed deformed. They were no longer round. But they looked round. The pistons would no longer slide up and down in the caps. I've learned to handle carbs better now. Just call me butter fingers. |
