Default XV 250 neutral problem

I searched forum to see if anybody has the same problem, but...
Just got a 94 xv 250, and I can only get it into neutral when i turn off the engine. Then itīs no problem - has anybode any good suggestions ?
When driving it shifts without any problem - except getting into neutral

hmmm do you move the bike back and forth while trying to put it back to neutral?

Iīll try tomorrow - I really canīt remember if I tried. But itīs still interesting - when I stop the engine I can put in neutral instantly.

Strange, I usually have the opposite problem. Maybe you are shifting too hard and going right past it?

Sorry for my late answer :-)
But Iīll just tell the story :
I just bought my bike, and the guy I bought it from had it for 2 years, and he didnīt do any service on the bike.
So I decided first of all to change oil an oilfilter. I couldnīt get 20w40, so I used 10W40. Now I can get into neutral. allmost everytime I wanīt.
