hey guys, i just got in contact with a private seller - wants to sell an '06 suzuki gs500f w/ 455 miles for $4000. i already went to a mechanic and paid them $85 b/c i thought i was going to get it; they checked it out and said it was legit. however, all my friends tell me i can get a better deal if i wait until winter time or a couple more months. is this a good offer i should just take advantage of? or should i wait a little bit and see if the price drops?
thanks. |

It sounds like a good deal to me. The bike is nearly new at 455 miles. It's a bit more than the average retail value for that bike, but the thing hasn't even been broken in yet.

Most bikes have a break-in period for the engine, usually 1000 miles or so, where the piston rings set into the pistons and all the little rough edges of the working parts get smoothed down. It's important to change the oil right after the break-in period to get all those little metal filings out of the engine.

Just a thought here. The modern manufacturing techniques are far superior to even 10 years ago and if there are little metal filings in oil, which is debatable, the original oil shouldn't be in the crankcase more than a few miles to prevent any potential damage. In my case, the engine oil of the bikes is changed in the first 100 miles and the filters are cut open to be sure there are no visible problems.

I noticed some really fine particles (like dust) stuck to the magnet in the primary when doing my 1000 mile service. The engine oil looked pretty clean.

I would say it may be a little high just because I just recently sold my 2007 for $4000.
But it's not a bad price, mine was imacculate when I sold it though, no scratches damage or anything. And yes waiting for off season is always worth the wait....if you can wait that long. People always start selling in the winter. |

This seems like a nice deal. I jsut bought a new 2007 gs500F from a dealer (with 0 miles) and it cost $4200 after negotiation. However, add all taxes, fees, Motor V stuff, and it came out to $5400. So I think your getting a nice deal.
The GS500F has a break in period of 500 miles (you should not go higher than 5,500 RPMS) then until 1000 miles you shouldnt break 8500 RPMS. Just so you know... (you can get up to around 65 mph without breaking your 5500 rpms in 6th) Its a great bike. <500 miles is almost new, and if your not paying taxes and such is good stuff. Make sure it was not dropped or abused. You can usually tell by the person/ the look of his house/ storage/ and jsut loooking at the bike. DOnt take it if it was dropped/cracked ferring or anything of that sort. |

I bet you can talk him down a few more hundred.....it's not that it's a bad deal, the bike holds it's value better than most, I just think he could get it a few hundred cheaper..... But it's a great bike, I had to park my FJR1300 and ride over the GS500 to my buddy who bought mine, I had forgotten how light and quick and smooth it was....they are great bikes. Either way you will really enjoy it, I think you can get it a little cheaper but if he won't go down.....you aren't getting bent over either. |

Probably not, actually... It's going to vary state by state, but MA and RI both assess sales tax based on KBB value, not the actual sale price. It works out well if you buy something that's in high demand for more than book value, but obviously not as well if you get a good deal.
