Default newbie girl looking to ride...help!

Hey everyone...I recently became struck with the obsession to ride. I am totally new to motorcycles, but I'm really excited to get into it. The problem is that I am about 5'5 and 110 lbs so I'm a little bit worried about what I can handle. I've read through some of the threads and it seems as though the ninja 250R is the way to go? I want a sport bike that is reliable and relatively low maintenance and preferably new. I would really appreciate any suggestions and advice from anyone at this forum =] Thanks!

Morning Vikki and welcome to the MC Forum!

Actually you sound like you're already on the right track. I would recommend (if you are not already) attending and completing a MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) course before proceeding any further.

Enjoy the forum,
LRG

When looking for a new motorcycle, be sure to find one you can comfortably sit on with both feet flat on the ground. There are several models that should fit you.

(continuing from Dod's post (in order of power and size of the bike)) The Ninja 250, suzuki gs500 ninja 500, (possibly) Ninja 650 and Sv650. Note these are all sport bikes, there are many other cruisers and standards that would fit. Also checkout the Honda Nighthawk, Suzuki Gz250 (do they still make the gs250?) and honda rebel.

I'm 116 and 5'4'' so when i started on my GS500 i thought it was too big for me. But with boots and some pratice it became much easier too handle. plus I like that the seating position isn't so agressive.

The GZ250 is still made, I actually have a 2000 model. I'm also a girl at 110 lbs. and about 5'2". This is a great bike for my first one, just my size and very easy to maneuver. It is more of a cruiser though, rather than a sport bike.

I know the GZ250 is still made, i rode one at the MSF class (great bike btw, slick styling for a 250). I was asking if the gS 250 is still made. I've been riding my friend's for practice till I get my bike (in about 11 hours from now). Thing is, my friends bike is a 1971...

Welcome Vikki! I too had the fever... motorcycle fever. I've only been riding for about 6 months and I still got the fever. So you're looking at a sportbike aye? My girlfriend is too. I'm trying to get her to pick up a Ninja 250 but she only wants the 2008 model. The 08 model looks so sweet compared to previous years. The problem is getting one. Since the gas prices are super inflated these days, it's hard to get one. Even the display models in my area are sold. One last note, is that their resell value is excellent.
On top of it all, like many mentioned before me, go check out the MSF class. That's where I learned to ride.
