The Kawasaki Versys would be a great choice, as well as one of the SV650 models. Don't start out on a supersport. You won't fit on one anyway.

Handlebars touching the knees is a bad thing

Probably the first thing to do is just sit on the bike in a riding position (with someone holding it up) and see how it feels. Move your feet from the stopped position to the riding position. A good fit should feel natural and sure. You don't want to be fumbling for the foot pegs as you merge into moving traffic!

Be sure to test-ride before you purchase also. If anything feels too tight or wonky on a short test ride, it will only get worse on a long ride.

Be picky in choosing your brand and model. You will know the bike is right once you have found it! Don't let the saleman steer you to something you may be unhappy with later.

My 82 Suzuki GS850 fits me nice now that I've installed 2" risers on the handlebars. A very nice upright seated position, similar to being on a dirtbike, IMO. I'm the same size as you. My buddy's Kawasaki Vulcan 900 fits me nice also. If you've got the ching, a Sporty isn't too bad either. Just my 2 cents from a tall guy.
