I'm having problems with my 94 softail Nostalgia. The engine (EVO) will shut off when it reaches approx 60 mph. The lights will all stay on, just the engine dies. It will then start right back up immediately after this happens. We have done all sorts of troubleshooting and have replaced everything anyone has suggested to include the following: ignition module, ignition switch, coil, regulator, starter, battery, battery cables, sensor plate, breakers. All wires have been checking for possible damage. The tanks have been drained and cleaned, pet**** replaced, plugs checked, carb jetted. My bike has 12000 original miles on it. The coil and module are screaming eagle. It has a screaming eagle filter on it . My bike has a fairing with the stereo on it, was having this problem prior to installing this. Running lights were added had problem prior to this also. Thought the problem was just when it was in 5th gear, ran it up to 60 in 4th and it shut off then too. Not sure what other info you might need. I'm so frustrated and out of ideas???? Anyone have any.

Wow I have a 2002 Indian Scout SS engine that is doing the same thing, run fine then just like someone hits the kill switch. Changed coil, checked wiring, rebuilt carb, drained gas, ignition switch. If you have a solution let me know. Going to change trigger plate. I hope this will resolve it.

The problem was the VOS (Vacuum Operating Switch) which advances the timing as you increase RPM's. The switch was intermitting at high speeds causing the timing to either advance to far or retard to much causing the engine to shut off. We changed this and now my bike runs great...no more problems....YEAH
Good Luck I hope this helps. Mooglider: |

Moonglider... Congrats on getting your mystery solved. Do you have pix of this VOS switch for others to view in case someone might run across this issue in the future? This sounds like a very frustrating and costly adventure you've been on. Glad you got it solved.

I don't have one at the moment but I will see if I can take one and post it. Yes, it was a long expensive process of elimination. I now have a 2008 1994 Heritage Softail Nostalgia

Why didn't you just take it to a shop? From the list of parts you threw at this poor thing trying to fix it, you spent about $800, probably more, to fix a $50 problem that a first-year tech could have identified in ten minutes. I know people hate going to the shop, but it would have saved you major cake in this case.
