That's a great idea! I clicked on the site but didn't see a price. Anybody know how much one of these jackets cost?

With my memory, I'd set it off every time I got off the bike. I can't tell you the number of times I've started the bike only to discover I hadn't taken the lock off of the forks. I need to have detachable keys so I don't have to restart the bike.

Default I don't think so

No helmet, airbag jacket, or anything else will save you from stupidity.

The article says he hit the ground at a 140 mph and slid 100 ft after being thrown from the bike. If he was going that fast: 1. He was stupid!! 2. He was going so fast the auto driver probably could not judge the MCs approach speed (in his mirrors), or the rider positioned himsrlf in the auto drivers blind spots.

I sure don't want government to decide to protect me by passing mandatory air jacket laws now. I usually don't even wear a helmet, it takes away from my enjoyment of riding.

Perhaps the answer should be to require an IQ test before granting a MC license ( 98 or better)? OR, maybe outlawing bikes that do more than 80 MPH, to protect me! I mean who really needs a street legal, licensed plated bike that can do 140 MPH ( I did not say 'want', I said need). Maybe MC should have a mandatory flashing light mounted on them to attract attention (like cop bikes) to make them safer? OR, perhaps age requirements will help. Say no one under 35, unmarried with no children should be licensed? WHERE DOES IT ALL END?

Perhaps cars and MCs should be co-driven by robotic systems that do faster, accurate analysis of road, traffic, and environmental conditions and take control of the vehicle away from the driver when adverse conditions or driver/rider stupidity is apparent? That could eliminate 'stunting', speeding, and a lots of street rider errors, and save us all!

Legislation, regulation, and technology is NO substitute for rider intellengence, rider skill, rider maturity, and rider (self) control. No, no more safety controls, safety gimics, or other 'safety' technological crutches are needed. Any fool can learn the physical aspects of riding and keeping the shiney side up and operating the throttle! It is the intellectual sklls and knowledge that make for successful MCist!!! Let the terminally stupid be purged from the gene pool. If you need all the safety crutches, you should not be on a MC!!!! Take personal responsibilty and rider like your life is constantly at risk, cause it is!

That is my rant for the day.

Ride safe & long,
Colorado Fats

You never wear a helmet? Who's the stupid one here? If he hit impact at 140 MPH,that doesn't mean he went 140 MPH. If he was going 140MPH, the point of impact would be around 250MPH. But hey, I'm going to wear my proper gear, and when I get back from a ride, I will read in the paper you were killed in an accident, because you failed to wear your helmet....some people....

I have been licensed and riding for 43+ years without a helmet, except in States where they are required. I've done 80-100K miles, in rain, snow, serious wind, city traffic, open roads, etc.

I have no problem with those that choose to wear helmets or other safety gear, but for myself helmets are encumbering and fatiguing. I don't like or need mandated 'safety laws' or equip. It is great that these devices are available and riders can choose to use or not use them.

Peraps its just what you get used to as a new rider? So far my head is ok, but my butt been roughed up once or twice.

If you have read other post of mine I admit to being the King of Stupid in my youth. I am a proponent of MC safety and rider education on the forums. But I also believe that real safety comes not from tech gimics, or devices that TRY to compensate for rider stupidity (stunting on streets, doing 100+ mph on public thourghfares, etc.). Safety, success, and survival come from smart, skilled (physically and mentally), responsible riders.

Think about this... Since most places have mandatory helmet laws and deaths of riders continue to rise, don't you think someone doing 100+ in an accident skidding or hitting another object should be reported on the news as 'killed by not wearing a helmet'

Thanls for the positive vibes on my (impending) death!

Ride safe and long,
Colorado Fats

I'm no expert, but I have had some physics classes. The only way a 140 mph crash would be a 250 mph impact would be if he had a head on collision with something going 110 mph in the opposite direction. If you're going 140 mph horizontally, and your head hits the ground, the impact force is exactly the same as if you fall and hit your head standing still. The vertical impact force is unaffected by the horizontal speed. That's why racers can low side at race speeds and walk away. Now if you it a wall at 140, you get the full impact of that speed.
