Neutral Switch come on in 5th gear

Put on new transmission cover and linkage on 2003 Harley Ultra Classic. Neutral light comes on in Neutral and 5th gear. Neutral light does not come on in 1st,2nd 3rd or 4th only in 5th gear????? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

I'm not very familiar with the specifics of Harley trannies, but every bike I've ever ridden has had neutral between every gear, but the light only comes on between 1st and 2nd. You may have the switch for the neutral light in the wrong place somehow.

Thanks for the reply. On the Harley the neutral switch is between 1st and 2nd but my problem is that it come on in 5th gear. There is only only place you can screw the neutral switch into the tranny on the Harley 88 engine.

I'm grasping at straws here because my knowledge base consists of knowing that you can't get to all gears with the engine off, but what if, since you changed the linkage, you shifted until the light comes on, pull the switch from the trans, shift the trans back down to where neutral should be and then put the switch back in? Could it just be out of sync with the changes that you made?

Yes, I've tried that. I've tried to raise the neutral switch until the light goes out while in 5th gear but the neutral light also stays out when I do that. I've tried to re-adjust the linkage to the end of the travel but that doesn't work. I talked to the Harley Dealer trans mechanic and he said he had never heard of this problem. He said he would like to look at it....will take it in but we have been having heavy rains and can't take a chance on riding in the heavy rains. I will post the fix if they are able to fix it. I thought perhaps someone else might have run into this problem before. I do thank you so much for your suggestions and help thus far.
