Default Shopping around...

So I'm looking at this Harley:

2008 Harley Davidson Sportster Custom, less than 3000 miles

Springville and Moab, UT 84532 | Mar 11, 2012

2008 Harley Sportster Custom 883 has less than 3000 miles, bought new in '08 but don't spend enough time riding. comes with leather saddle bags, Vance & Hines straight shot pipes, stock exhaust pipes, quick disconnect rear sissy bar with luggage rack. Great all around bike for anyone and fun to ride with great gas mileage. Just replaced the battery too.

and I'm seeing custom 883's or 1200's listed for the same price. First of all that seems weird to me...Is there not much difference? This will be my first road bike so I wanted to start off with a smaller one. Any thoughts? Would this be a good first bike?

The bikes are very similar; look very much alike and weigh about the same.

The real difference is the displacement which results in significantly more torque (and HP) in the 1200 as well as about 5 to 10 mpg less than the 883. If the bike is the same year and same mileage, I would expect to pay about $1500 more for the used 1200 than the 883.

I chose the 1200 over the 883. I probably would have loved the 883, but now I love my 1200. I'm certain the "relative" lack of power would be a problem for me now.

In terms of a "good first bike," the 883 is one of many excellent choices.

Sweet. Thanks man! I can't believe the prices I'm seeing on them on KSL and Craigslist!
