Just purchased a 1972 GT380, and I am in the process of putting it back together. The bike is currently a factory green, but it is pretty beat up, and I am wanting to paint it while it is stripped down.
I was planning on getting everything powdercoated matte black, but one I got a quote for it I am not sure I want to throw down that much money for a paint job on such an old bike. Rattle can is my next option, but every time I have ever rattle canned anything the paint has started to chip almost immediately, especially since I live in the country so rock chips will be a huge problem. My third option is plasti dip. I plasti dipped the wheels on my Honda Civic back in October, and I was only planning on it staying on for a week or two, but almost 6 months later it is still holding up with no chipping or peeling at all! I am just not sure how well it would hold up on a motorcycle. I am thinking about just rattle canning it matte black, then putting a few coats of plasti dip over it so if the plasti dip does peel, it will still be matte underneath. What do you guys think? |

I <3 Plasti Dip myself haha. When applied generously it holds up very very well. On the 94 RF900R I just got I am thinking of doing the frame with plasti dip just due how easy it is and it covers up small scratches with out any real prep work besides a wipe down. Plus, dip your car.com has a metalizer that I can make it look like a gun metal type finish.

I will definitely be checking that out! Thanks! And I think I am just going to plasti dip it for this summer so I can get it finished up and ride it, then maybe repaint it next winter depending on how the plasti dip holds up.

I can't find the gun metal one at this time, I'll keep looking though. Fonzie is a really easy guy to work with so you can always contact him too.

Yeah I only found gold and silver, but since I am doing gold wheels I'll probably use that gold metalizer for the wheels. And who is Fonzie?

He's the owner of the site that I referenced. He started out just doing his B8 S4 and I saw the results originally on the Audizine forum. (I own a B5 S4)

is plasti dip gas proof?
if you use it as a clear coat on a gas tank will the gas eat it away? |

SprayMax 2K, two part catalyzed paint. Same stuff painters use. Durable finish, but not sure if they have matte finish. You could spray then scuff with a really fine Scotch pad for the look.
