Are you looking for a street bike? Are you looking for a sports bike or a cruiser or what kind? The sports bike answer will be Ninja 250. There are lots of cruisers that are ok for a first bike. You'll have to let some more experienced folks chime in on the cruisers and other style bikes. I've only been riding for a year and a half. If you want 125cc and under, you might not have more than a handful to choose from.

Personally, I would not recommend anything under 250cc for a street bike, only because there are size limits on the interstate, and if you do go there, you will want to be able to keep up with traffic.
Yes, the minimum speed on the interstate is 45mpr, but you DO NOT WANT to be going that slow when your on a bike. Just too much risk of someone smacking you from behind because your going so much slower than the flow. Other choices than the 250 Ninja mentioned above would be the 500 Ninja as far as sport bike style goes, and if cruisers are your thing, well, there is the Honda Rebel, but I consider that MINIMAL for the interstate, and in some areas, I would have to say it just wont cut it. The Honda VLX is a good choice, as well as the Kawasaki Vulcan 500. Even a 750 Shadow is a decent first bike, though the weight is almost 550lbs, which some might find intimidating if just starting out on the street. there are actually quite a few good choices out there. Hopefully, more will chime in on some of them.

I have read that the newer 250's have a decent bit of speed for interstate driving, never rode one though. I was the ass clown that got a GPz 600r for his first bike, don't be me.

Well, The only 250cc bikes I can judge on are the two I mentioned.
With the interstate, your talking speeds that in a lot of areas average 80mpr or so. For most states, thats about +15 over the legal limit

I have seen older ninja 250s handle highway speed quite easily. it depends on the rider if you are 250 pounds pick a bike that is meant to handle you and take it slow.( I don't mean a big cruiser) I recommend actually looking up a bunch of bike models and seeing which ones can support your weight/size/comfort, and provide a good learning experience at the same time. just make sure to make a well researched decision and you will most likely do fine.

and just to add to the 250 thing, keep in mind it will keep up with traffic, but if you want to get over and pass somebody.... you need to plan ahead (this is HW speeds btw, on 45 mph roads you might have enough getup if you get in a low enough gear)

I have seen plenty of 250s do passing in 45 mph traffic I have also seen large sized people on little bikes and it isn't safe. Those bikes are not designed for 200lb. individuals or exceptionally tall individuals. So original poster tell us about yourself. (hint)

if you are talking about electric motorcycles Brammo and zero are both companies that make excellent bikes the brammo is my favorite with customizable drive trains to suit what kind of riding you want to do. The price tag may seem high for these bikes, but in all seriousness the maintenance on the bike is next to nothing and it costs 17 cents a night to fully charge the bike.

I have a ninja 250 and on the street can fly by people I need to pass if necessary at 45 mph. Figure out if you want a cruiser or sports bike. One you figure this out, figuring what model to get will be easier and people can specify bikes. An MSF course will certainly be advisable as well if you have
