Default My first accident story

Yep, had my first accident today. Luckily my bike has minimal damage, no scratches (thanks to my frame sliders) and just a broken taillight. I'm fine, except for a bit of road rash on my knees.

Anyway, I was taking a curve at around 45mph, and there was some gravel/sand on the outside. I don't know what I was thinking, but I decided to take the curve on the outside anyway. Well before I know it, I'm on the ground sliding with my bike on top of me. I quickly got up, assessed the damage, and finished my ride home.

All in all, a very rookie mistake. I'm very lucky there was as little damage as there was, both on my bike and me. My gear definitely saved my skin (except I was only wearing jeans on my legs, hence the road rash). There was a big scratch right down the middle of the front of my helmet, and if I wasn't wearing a full-face helmet, that would have been my face. Ouch.

Sorry to hear that, but glad you're OK. Bikes are easy to fix...all it takes is money. Humans, not so easy. Hope your knees heal quick and you get back in the saddle, a little wiser. Ride safe.

Kurtis,

I am so sorry to hear about your accident! But I am glad to hear that neither you or your bike suffered any severe damage. But being aware of road rash on knees, ouch! Hope they heal up fast! And before you can ask, I did not get road rash from falling off any moving objects.

Where Im from if there is sand in the road that caused you to wreck you could be compensated financially for repairs on your bike and/or doctor bills by the state. Im not talking about suing their pants off but it will cost to get your bike repaired and a new helmet and I think thats the least you can ask for. They put sand all over the roads in the winter and if they don't clean it all up it causes headaches for us bikers.

Glad your ok man. We all go down at least once. Part of the experience, sadly enough.

Hunter S Thompson once wrote that there is a beautiful and terrifying silence before you go down; did you hear it?

I remember my first accident. It was the day I bought the motorcycle (a ktm). I was passenger thought. We were riding home, when in some village after a curve there was a services car right in the middle of our lane. My friend tried braking, and in a second we found ourselves down. We were both fine, and the motorcycle was ok, only a mirror broken. Only after that we realized what happened, and belive it or not, I felt really great. I was like someone have waken me up and I felt I could do everything from that moment.

I get honked at all the time because if I see a lot of sand I slow down tremendously. I'm not sure what the right thing to do is in those situations.

First time I laid one down was when I was 12 and illigally rode my older brothers friends 'Ciao' moped around town. I took a left onto a street that had some water in the gutter flowing across the street. I took the turn like normal and started sliding laterally. Bam!! the bike and I went down, face down in the middle of the street. I was'nt hurt ,except for my pride, bcs I stopped traffic on all sides and people were asking if I was ok. I was worried about the police coming as I recovered from the spill and move out of the street. Needless to say I am weary of water, sand, leaves, paint and other things as I make turns.
