Question Left, Right or middle

Which side of the lane do you ride and why...

Myself I ride close to the yellow line or the middle of my lane on smaller country roads EXCEPT when going over a hill then I tend to move to the outside edge in case some1 comes over the hill in the middle..... ( just got back into biking bout 6 weeks ago a lot has changed since I rode)

I normally prefer the left side of the lane, unless topping some sharper hills. I find that I usually keep gravitating to that position even when there is no other traffic around.

*edit* Except on the superslab, then I tend to float Left to Right for visibility reasons.

Mostly left but I too tend to move around a bit in an attempt to be better noticed.

It depends on the situation I am in at that particular moment. There are so many factors that can influence my choice of lane positioning, I just go where I need to be.

I'm all over the place, considering the road surface, the debris, the traffic, and that dog that's running at me.

I usually ride on the left of the lane, closer to the center line. But I'll move around depending on the situation and where I feel safest and the most visible.

To the left of the lane if alone or leading a group.
I miss the potholes that seem to be near the shoulder and I feel I am more visible to oncoming traffic.

If following someone, I ride the opposite lane from them so they can better see me in their mirrors.

If for any reason I would feel I need to not be as visible to LEO, I hug the edge near the shoulder. My thought being that I wouldn't be near as visible as I would be farther out on the road.

Only thing to add is to own your lane

I try to move around a bit as well, depending on traffic & road conditions.

Around here in the mtns I'll hug different sides of my lane for a little different reasons than most. If I'm coming around a blind corner, which most of them are, I will hug the farthest outside edge. My experience with driving these type roads for 30 some odd years is that 50% of the time opposing traffic, including bikes, will be in your lane at least 2-3'. If on a road with a clear line I'll stick to the yellow line; This gives me a slight advantage if any animal comes out of the woods on me. Also gives said animal a better sight at me and they will sometimes spook back in. Highway driving, I just ride where I'm the most comfortable which is nowhere due to I hate highways.

Left side of the lane. My headlight is more apparent in the driver's side mirror instead of the one on the other side. If no one is in front of me I switch it up...

During the day I like riding the center of the lane, the roads that I ride each day are also traveled by trucks so the smoothest part of the road is the center. However at night I ride the left normally following a cage.
My daily commute takes me on a road with many blind corners and I have learned to expect the unexpected and as previously stated cages and some bikers don’t stay in their lanes. The right portion of the lane in my area has had falling rocks, sand, and gravel and of course with no warning.
On the freeway I like to ride the left lane with the flow of traffic but to the left side of the lane with at least a three second space between whatever vehicle I’m following. If I get stuck behind a truck I increase that to at least four seconds.

i personally almost always ride in the left side of the lane, for a couple reasons.. so the person in front of me can see me through their drivers side mirror, so anyone turning left at a light that is not protected will think twice before jumping out in front of me. and i am usually in the number 1 lane cause people like to slow down to 0 mph to turn right for some unknown reason.

I asked both my brothers who ride the OP's question and both of them had the same response. YES. Meaning they ride where ever they believe it is safest at the moment

This is my feeling as well, except right now. Currently the center is all full of gravel and road debris from a long winter. I will avoid that area until the street sweepers are out in force. Unfortunately there is more snow in the forcast, so the plows are at the ready. The street sweepers will have to wait......

Around here, given the narrow lanes on some roads if I rode the left side of the inner lane I'd be taken out by some jackhole crossing the double-solid coming the other way. I tend to stay in the middle if possible, though have found myself having to move to the right of the inner lane to avoid aforementioned jackholes...

I think a lot also depends on the area we're riding in. Like Kat said, in her area she stays to the center due to jackholes crossing the line. Near me this is almost never seen, so I tend to ride left unless conditions warrant otherwise.
@Badlands, I am sorry you still have snow in the forcast. Hoping you get to go out for the season soon.

Yep- When I first moved here, I couldn't believe how narrow the lanes are. Too many cars and trucks thinks nothing of straightening a turn by going straight and taking up almost all the the on-coming lane. Plus, on tight turns, even though your tires may be in your lane, 2/3 of you is leaning over into on-coming trafffic (or at lest potential traffic.

For some reason dump trucks think this is Grand Prix racing and go fast. They consistantly go off the shoulder in right turns and throw gravel up on the roads. There are many hidden driveways that dump gravel on the road- especially after a rain.

Critters; for some reason I have a sft spot for turtles. I just hate to hit one.
there there are wild turkeys, and dogs. Especially in the more rmote areas, dogs will invite a friend over to his little patch of sun and just flop out in the middle of the road. They seem irritated to have to move.

Off the freeway, there really is no inside/outside/middle around here.

Send all the Dislike this way that you want. It will pale in comparison to how much I dislike snow in May! Still could be worse. No tornados in our forcast...... Got to feel for those folks down south.

Yeah. A friend of mine used to live right up stairs from me. At the beginning of the month, I drove him to the bus station. He moved down there to Georgia.

I just got a call yesterday from him. They had just got cellphone service back, and he said it was gonna be another 5 days before they got power again. Fortunately, him and his gf and family are all ok, so in spite of the current hardships they are dealing with, they are content knowing that they are all safe.

When I read this, I thought you were going to say something about losing top half of the house in a tornado.

Glad to hear they are doing good. I have family all over the south, thank God none of them were hurt in all that mess.

Just heard from them today. Things are rough goin for everyone down there, with shortages on food in the open stores and long lines for gas. Still, they'll get through this, and God willing, they wont have any more distructive storms in that area for a while.

Usually around the middle somewhere. Drift left and right as needed. Stay closer to the left when the opposite lane is empty, but I'm rarely hugging right.
