Question shifting

i have a 1992 fxstc harley softail.when i down shift from 5th to 4 i have to go halfway down pick up shifter slightly and than down to get to 4th.same with 3rd, 2nd, also the same when up shifting to 2nd-5th.no grinding of gears, humming, all gears seem fine when in a gear or out.

Most likely a shift linkage adjustment is needed. If that doesn't solve it I'd look at the transmission shifter arm and make sure it's not damaged or bent. After that, look at the shaft for the same things. Has the bike ever been dropped on it's left side? Next would be to make sure the shifter pawl is centered correctly when in any gear. If that's okay then your problem is internal. My guess would be a worn shifter cam.
