Ok , I bought a 94' vulcan 1500 classic with 14xxx miles on it the guy said it had sat for a year and was riding it , so I rode it home ,the clutch was grabby in first, by the time i got home (11 miles) the clutch stoped working so I opened the master cylinder and there were more solids than liquids in there (this thing sat for way more than a year) so i cleaned out and put fresh fluid in all the hydrolics on the bike changed oil , coolant , cleaned tank removed the goo that was in the air cleaners and got new foam ($24 EACH) put fresh gas with seafoam took her out and the clutch was still grabing making slow take off difficult , so I looked around online saw some advise about putting seafoam in the crank and ride it like ya stole it , well that worked well...and about 30 seconds later at the next light the bike wouldn't idle down , give it a twist or two .. no help, now its starting to misfire and back fire and the it sounded like one cylinder went dead all in about 5-10 seconds, so I hit the kill switch and look down at my pipes as the engine is dying to see bluish/white smoke comming out . luckly I was a block from home and pushed it (I never noticed those little hills in the sidewaly before) then I noticed some fresh oil drops on top of the left engine cover .
I'm looking for any thoughts or ideas or guesses as to what happened. My guess is that something got stuck in one of the carbs , i'm hoping that the seafoam in the crank didnt egnite I used 3.5 ozs as per directions. When it cooled down I did check that it would turn over, it did . I wont have time to get into it for about a week, maybe start dissassambly to get at the carbs next Sunday Any thoughts are appreciated. |

first, check your plugs (since you changed everything else)
maybe your seafoam kicked a piece of crud loose and got is stuck at a smaller area (jet). You could consider tossing seafoam in the gas, putting some in a spray bottle and squirting in the air filter (while running) and get letting everything clean out. When you changed the fluids, you didn't necessarily scrape the sides, so things are falling loose now. good luck! |

Thanks for the replys. Yeah the plugs , I kept forgetting to get them and when I had everthing else done I just cleaned the old ones...I got antsy.
Would that be straight seafoam in the spray bottle or mixed with gas? Also, the drops of oil on the left side cover came from the rear cylinder exhaust, would this be normal for what I described sounding like a carb issue? I'm just hoping that I dont have a compound problem. update , I couldnt wait, I checked the plugs the rear ones were a little oily , I went and started er up , she idoled fine then got stuck when i gave er some gas , so , I'm semi relieved . 2nd edit: Ok I just saw where clockdaddy said this in another post "The pressure in the cylinder of my cruiser is so high that the engine has a decompression valve to relieve the cylinder pressure to allow the engine to crank over. That decomp valve is a one way valve, Thus, when you downshift quickly using the engine to slow you, the backpressure on the pistons is so strong that it can pull oil through the piston rings." I was trying to unstick the platesand was shifting and down shifting pretty hard, maybe this is the source of the oil comming outta the exhaust? Last edited by DeltaP; 04-12-2010 at 07:15 PM.. |
