Default repair issues...

I took my motorcycle to a shop for a repair on an engine noise. While the mechanic was disassembling the motorcycle he broke the shifter. He then replaced it and charged me for the replacement part. I didn't notice when I was paying because I was excited to get my motorcycle back and go for a ride. Should I try to get the money back from him?

What he will say is the shifter was damaged and it was broken because of the damage, rude that he didn't mention this but I have had parts break before when getting something worked on that I had to pay for. Usually stealership will call and say we can try to take it off but if it breaks we are not responsible.

Good luck if the mechanic also owns the shop, otherwise you have a reasonable chance. After all, how much is your promoting their good work worth versus badmouthing them for breaking stuff and charging you. And did they give you the broken shifter back like they're supposed to?

Remember, nothing ventured nothing gained. A reputable shop owner or dealer will do right for you. Especially if future work hinges on it. Don't be afraid to let them know they will be the one to do future work you may have - if you feel treated fairly. Any sensible business man would trade off the cost of that part for the future profits from your business and those you may guide there due to their fairness.

that's a bummer, but if it wasn't negligence he may just say that it was old and broken and needed replaced.

Well...my mechanic gave me a specific cost for my work, if I go into the shop today and pick up my bike and there is a difference in the cost, I would not pay the difference...he did not call me and tell me first of all for additional service and cost and second of all it did not need replaced, until they broke it ....and then I would be talking to the owners, because if they broke it...what else did they do to my bike??? how was it treated??? small claims court action??? Better Business Bureau action???
They don't want to go there....I am sure of it!!!

One more note... If you actually want the owner to do something about it - Don't be a prick about it. Calm and collected rational discussion will get the job done. Treat them as YOU want to be treated. Maximize your chances of getting what you want by being nice about it.

I've seen two of my former employers go off when a customer came in gang busters and insulting. They sent the guys packing.

One guy was a friend and we were talking nice and rational about how the bowling ball he bought was misdrilled and the problems involved. The guy went ballistic the instant the area manager showed up. No rationality, instant raised voice and threats. He got nothing. Afterwards the manager and I talked, he knew I was friends with the guy. I told him how I couldn't understand why my friend went off. He had me call my friend and for him to come back in to correct the problem. If I hadn't known the guy he would have gotten nothing and the store would have lost sales due to his dissatisfaction.

The other case was a guy who was insulting and rude to my dealership owner/employer/friend. He was given nothing and sent away. We talked about how it was hard to believe this guy got this way, it just didn't seem in character or right. The owner called the guy, took the first step apologizing for what he felt was a total misunderstanding and wanted the guy to come back and they'd deal with the problems. Again, it would have resulted in a customer without resolution and a shop losing sales/work.

Keep cool and calm. You might find you get what you give. Respect and understanding.
