I ran across a 1981 Honda CB900C that looks nice seems to run fine but the battery won't hold a charge. Everything else seems ok, the bike needs some TLC. The guy wants $400.00 for it. I am guessing the charging system can be rebuilt for a few hundred if I do it myself. Is there anything I should look out for with this bike? Is there a know problem that is expensive or hard to repair as far as the charging system. I heard the motors are very reliable on theses bikes.
Does it keep running if you jump it. If it does it should just need a new battery, more than likely. If it wont stay running and needs a ne stator /alternator or whatever you want to call it, it would depend on if you feel like doing the work. I would first make sure I can get the parts at a decent price then sure why not, toys are toys. I wouldn't buy it if I was going to have to take it to a shop to have the problem fixed.
Only way to be sure is have a mechanic look at it. I know it's only $400, but do you want it just sitting there taking up space if there is a major problem? It could cost more to fix it.
The owner just put a new battery in it. The bike runs until the battery goes dead. It won't be going to a shop. I do all my owner repairs an everything I own. I have never worked on a Honda CB900 but I have worked on other bikes. I have found a lot of similarity's over the years between brands. I hate when they hit you with the special tool to remove a simple item that always throws a snag in an easy repair. From the parts I looked up it looks like like a few hundred will cover the parts but since I never work on this brand bike I don't know what I will find. I found it has a 10 speed transmission. You would think our the years I would have heard about 10 speed but I I never did.
I in fact owned a 1981 Honda CB 900 Custom. I bought it in 1982 and it had 3000 miles on it. When I sold it in 1986 it had 46,000 on it. How many miles are on this bike?
I can tell you this, if the engine is in good shape you have got yourself one fast strong machine. If you give it a little TLC this could be a fine machine for you. They really look good all shined up and good paint, and rubber. One of the best Honda ever made in my estimation.
To answer a few questions. $400.00 won't make me or break me. The bike has 62000 miles on it to my surprise or at least that's what the owner said I guess he knows it's his. I guess if it has been taken care of that's not bad but it sure doesn't look like a bike with that much mileage.
