8 years here.. after divorce and resulting finance woes and finally coming to the realization that if you wait for the perfect time to do it, you never will. Someday never comes.
I waited almost 15 years, and voted accordingly. My last bike was a BMW K75, which was totaled in a nasty wreck about 1993. I wasn't afraid to get back on, just life took different directions after I was all healed up. I'm happy to be riding again.
42 years ago, I sold my Honda Dream 305. Bought a Suzuki C 50 2 months ago. Started with a Honda Trail 50 three years before the 305. Had 1 wreck on each of them, both at under 10 mph.
I had never heard of pushing the handle bars away from the turn until I got this new bike. Anybody know how long ago they started teaching that?
I put none, but that's kinda misleading as I've only been riding 2 years.
My husband is a "re-entry" rider after a 20 year hiatus; used to ride a Kawi Z-1000 back in the day, then bought a Harley a couple years ago. I rode on the back a few times, got hooked, and now ride an SV 650S.
Thirty years for me. Had a 175 Honda in the 70s, but marraige and kids got in the way. Now the kids are grown, I don't have the wife and I have a 2008 Kawasaki vn900 classic.
I started out on an old Honda 70 street bike, rode it around the yard at my grandparents, when I was 7, got a dirt bike at 14, killed it at 15, only rode 2 bikes since then, one around a block a few years ago and one home from my dads work 8 years ago (7 miles) until now at 36 I bought my new Suzuki C50C. so it was 20 years (with 2 rides in between)
This is my 40th season on the street and I was riding 5 in the dirt before that. I have yet to find the desire to give it up. Heck, I'm teaching grandkids now so I'll have somebody that I know well to ride with. I don't need to find a ride partner, I'm building them....
It was a 15 year wait for me. I had an '86 Ninja 600 when I was young and had the need for speed. Now that I'm older and can once again afford "toys" I picked up an '03 Yamaha V-Star 1100 Custom. With only 500 miles on it when I bought it (July 4, 2008) it's as if it's a new bike. I think the "lay off" did me good as I would have killed myself since I recently noted I'm in no rush to get anywhere.
Sold my Honda "Hurricane" 1000 when I was in my early 20's to get a brand new shiny red sports car. I just turned 38 and decided I missed the ride too much went out and got a CBR 1000rr to pick up where I left off. I find I enjoy & appreciate the ride much more now that I’m older.
Wow, almost 2 years between posts, great thread to restart.
Rode a Honda 100 street and trail in 1973, crashed a couple of times prompting my mother to sell it out from under me while at school. Life and wife kept me off for the next 35 yrs., wifes idea to start again (shocker). Been 2 yrs. now and lovin every minute of it, even rode across the country and back (7,600 miles alone).
I got my first bike, a beat-up Honda 350, back in '74 when I was a starving college student. Next up was a 400cc thumper that wasn't fit for the freeway, and finally a Honda 550F when I first got to Silicon Valley in '77. The rush-hour work commute was a big factor in giving up riding for 33 years.
Just started back a month ago, and am enjoying more than ever. My little V Star is easily the best bike I've ever owned. Fun to putt around town on, and fun in the twisties.
I rode friends older bikes(usualy harleys)
and dirtbikes back in the mid 80's. Had an 81 Yamaha Maxim 650 for a while in 03-04 (terrible fuel mileage). Now I'm ridin a Yamaha V-Star 1100. Hopefully for a long time.
25 year hiatus for me. I had to raise a family there in between. I have been riding for a month, again now and I am loving every second on my bike. I plan on upgrading to my dream bike in about a year. I like big ones. I have a 750 Shadow right now. It is perfect to get a grey headed guy going again.

Almost 20 years, I spent 10 of them as a SCUBA instructor in the Caribbean, and the next 10 trying to make a little money. Now back to riding and loving it again, the nice thing now is that I have a great wife to ride with.
