Hello all motorcycle enthusiasts first time thread and new rider here. Just a little background info, im 20 yrs young starting school in month and a half, and looking into buying a motorcycle. I would prefer a sportbike but open minded to cruisers. I have been riding my 10 speed mountain bike and riding bus for work for over a year now and Im kind of fed up with it. I have applied for a school loan that i will have about 2000$ after school expenses. the problem is that im a first time borrower so they cant give me the only until 30 days AFTER i start school. Ive been looking at craigslist for what to expect with prices. I recently came across a '85 nighthawk 650 for about $700. this bike has a clean title(supposedly) and about 30k miles. only thing he says is wrong is the transmission grinds in the 4th and 5th gear. will this be a huge problem for me? I honestly plan on taking it slow for a while since its a 650. will i need to shift into uppers gears much? or will i need to replace whole tranny? since i know nothing about mechanics and im a first time buyer its hard to tell if im being played, or just a smokin' deal. should I wait until I get my loan to get a decent '05+ ninja or jump on this opportunity?
Thanks in advance, -Daniel |

The transmission grinding is really bad news. (and expensive to fix) I would recommend a pass on that one.

I also recommend passing on this bike. You will absolutely need the upper gears. "Taking it slow for a while" will include all of what? Hours? Days? Weeks at the very most? And then what? You'll have a bike with only 3 usable gears.
Pass.
