Grew up in England and Holland for several years. Never a problem for the average joe. In fact, if you were to suffer a gallbladder attack (for instance) requiring immediate surgery while in England on vacation, the sum total of your medical bills would be zero.

Before people get on their high horses about "it's rationing!" what we do right now is rationing. It just goes to the highest bidder.
I said nothing of rationing, sucky slow service, and very slow to send you to a specialist if you aren't dieing.
If you were "snake bit" you'd likely die before they decided their course of action.

To the contrary, emergency services are well managed. Its the non-emergent that suffers.

Since the snake thread has somehow crossed the line into health care I fell it important that I share my experiences with "socialized medicine."

Here is just a sample; brace yourselves.

I wake up one day sick as he11, so I call the local Veterans clinic to see if I can get in to see a doctor, keep in mind this place easily has 30-40 doctors working there, the soonest they can get me in is about a month away, I think it was 27 days away. They tell me if I am very sick go to the emergency room, but it has to be the VA emergency room or I will have to pay for it. Well, the VA hospital is a little over an hour away, but I was very sick so I head up. I get there check in and wait. After 4 hours waiting I get called back where I wait another 30 minutes. Finally a nurse comes in takes my temp tells me I have a prescription to pick up and to make a follow up with my primary care doctor. I go to the pharmacy wait another 35 minutes to get my prescription, I open the bag and what is my medicine? A package of daytime Tylenol cold and flu.

As for emergency services anything less than life or limb, you are going to wait. Non emergency I wait months to see a doctor who generally wants to schedule tests then have me come back at a latter date. Before I had my stomach surgery I saw four different doctors in the same department for the same thing before one of them looked through my file and asked why they kept having me do the same test over and over.

I know It is free and I shouldn't complain but it has gotten to be a bit ridiculous. The light at the end of the tunnel has always been soon I will have good health insurance and won't have to use the VA, but it seems like I will be going from a bad system to a bad system.

This is the exact same ***** I deal with as well.
And if I were to suddenly have a massive heart attack, and they rushed me to the ER here to save my life, I would STILL have to pay out of my own pocket, because they say I did not go to Togus...

never mind that I would have ****ING DIED on the way to togus, which is about an hour away, but I am less than five minutes from Thayer hospital...

I agree that the current models for VA healthcare, etc. suck. My ex-father-in-law was a VA doctor. There is no reason why that has to be the basis for nationalized health care. There is no reason why we could not use the existing model of general health care delivery. The only issue is payment of the bills. There is a tremendous amount of fat in every current medical bill. Check the cost of the single ibuprofen pill on a hospital admission bill -- ten years ago it was $12 per pill. In addition to just reaming of the general public, hospitals are also over-charging paying customers with the excuse of making up for the non-paying customers.

BTW, I blame Millard Fillmore.

Right on Goalie.

Just because the VA system is bad, this does not mean a national system would be equally as bad.

There are models of nationalized systems that work quite well. We need to model ours after these success stories. Germany is one.

That snake is NOT gay. You can clearly see it is red, which makes it republican. And we all know there are no gay republicans.

While riding our bicycles a few weekends ago my wife ran over a Gardner snake that was stretched out enjoying the sun across the the bike path. That really ticked him off because when I rode up from behind he tried to bite me and grabbed a hold of my shoe lace and wouldn't let go. It took about 20 feet for me to stop and kick my shoe off. He finally let go and slithered into the weeds. Good thing for him my wife ran him over. If it was me he would have been crushed.

LOL, just out for a nice relaxing bicycle ride after work, and the last thing you would expect. I knew it was just a Gardner snake, but it was over four feet long and ticked off, coiling around my leg. Its funny now but at the time....

When I was building my Datsun I had several parts cars. I dragged a Z home for some interior peices. I opened the glove box about the same time my brother yelled at me. I turned to look at him and a speckled king snake crawled down my leg to the ground

Speaking of snakes..

Earlier today I watched a documentary called "The Elephant in the Living Room". One of those documentaries that brings up the "ethical" questions regarding owning exotic pets. A lot of it had to do with public safety concerns blah blah blah blah.

Anyway, in one part a public safety officer that works in Ohio talked about the time he got called to handle a "python" that was on the loose. A couple kids had found it and were playing with it. A concerned adult had made the call.

Turns out the "python" wasn't a python. It was a Gaboon Viper. Snake was huge, and there was footage of the Officer (who had a lot of experience with handling animals of all kinds) wrangling the snake out of a garage.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitis_gabonica

The kids had been walking around with it slung over their shoulders, and doing other hands on activities wiith it.
(Wiki article says they're docile snakes, which is why the kids were able to play with it without getting bitten)

Definitely not the kind of snake you'd want to just stumble upon in suburban Ohio, which is by no means its natural habitat.
