Hi everyone. This is my first post. I'm here because I was looking for a place to get answers from people already in the know. I last rode motorcycles in the late 80s having rode for several years back then. I've just decided to buy another bike and I'm going to pick it up this Monday. (a 2009 Yamaha V Star 950). In my research online, I noticed that a lot of people replace the stock exhaust on this bike. If I do this, I'm leaning toward the Cobra Slashdown. My question is do I need to also install a fuel management system with this, or can I just install the pipes alone? I would also like any good recommendations on where to get good accessories at reasonable cost, such as handlebar extensions, windshield, seat backrest, saddlebags, etc. I found a place to get the Cobra exhaust for $469 and that's the best I've found so far.

I would check with the Cobra webpage about the fuel management. You won't need to buy the one they sell, but you might need to make adjustments to keep the fuel mixture correct.

Edit: From the PDF instructions at Cobra:

Quote:
Cobra highly recommends using a Fi2000® Fuel Management System to help eliminate lean conditions and popping sounds

Default Thank you

Thank you for the info. I'll probably get the Cobra system.

Another thing to do is to check with someone who works on them. If your bike has a closed loop EFI system with wide band O2 sensors you might not have to add a FM system.

You can get cheaper systems than the Cobra if you are on a budget. (For around 1/2 the price)

These are usually manually set for your pipes and intake or can be flashed with the proper programming downloaded from online.

The Cobra system claims to be totally automatic without having to manually fiddle with the settings, which is likely why it costs more.
