Default Cooked Arms...

I celebrated fathers day yesterday, I live in Los Angeles and my old man lives in Victorville, about an hour away. So... It was such a nice sunny day here in Cali and I decided to finally ride in my new Speed and Strength Vest I got http://www.ssgear.com/catalog/item.c...7-d44a10d296b1
And like an idiot I completely ignored the fact that well...my arms would get cooked without sun block. And cooked they got. Riding in the desert with a vest and sunblock will do that to you. Right where the vest starts on the shoulder there is a huge distinction of skin and burnt skin.

But the ride up there and back was awesome

I got cooked today as well. Maybe some aloe will take away some of the sting.

I wear long sleeves when I go out now. Golf, walking, riding. Sick and tired of the farmer's tan and getting torched from bicep down. easy enough to roll em up when I need to cool down a bit and roll them back down when it gets really sunny.

Now you know why desert dwellers always wear full coverage outfits.

we're all had that problem on a long ride.
it's the "ohhhhh brother, what have I done?" feeling.

one answer ... wear long-sleeve white T-shirts.
And leather bands that go around your wrists (over the cuffs).

the arms of the shirt protect against the sun - very helpful on long rides.
On a bike it is very hard for our brain to tell that our skin is getting cooked, because the breeze is strong while we are riding.

the leather straps prevent the cuffs of the shirt from riding up on your forearms. otherwise the wind will puch them up.

good luck,
dT

...And do not forget the fun and games associated with cancer surgery, chemo, and then more surgery. No one thinks it will happen to them, but it ain't fun, speaking from personal experience.
BTW,getting on board with a good dermatologist trained to watch for cancer BEFORE there is a problem is about the best advice I can give you.....

That's the same thing that gets you at the beach. The breeze coming in from the ocean creates an illusion of "cool" that puts a real crimp in a vacation.

I get a nice "wristwatch" burn or tan when I ride. My warm weather gloves do not come up far enough and my jacket sleeves do not come all the way to the gloves. I have been trying to find some good hot weather mesh gloves that still have gauntlets but so far have not found any.

Just asking, but why do you want summer gloves with guantlets?

I want mesh gloves but with enough to cover my wrists. I always get burnt between the sleeve of my jacket and my short gloves.

OK, I get it. I don't think I've ever seen summer gloves with guantlets (although I have not looked for them either). Now I will.

I went out wit ha chick from Maine, she said there were only two seasons there: Winter and August.

I usually ride in tshirt or a rolled up long sleeve around town. I have a naturally olive like complexion anyway so i don't burn. Although my ol lady always begs me to wear sunscreen. She's pretty fair though, but she's also probably right....again.

LWRider - do you know anyone who sews? Find a pair of summer gloves that you like and that fit, and a gauntlet could be added.

You know, that's not a bad idea and I do know someone local who is good and inexpensive who did my backrest upholstery for me. along with occasional jacket liner fixes. Thanks for the suggestion.

I keep a small bottle of sunscreen in the bike. For just these occasions.

Gonna hit 95 deg tomorrow. And I have a double header =/
Guess I shall be bringing a LOT of gatorade with me.

Fortunately, my arms have had enough exposure I shouldn't get burned

Looking at 100 degrees here on Thursday afternoon. I'm riding tomorrow, but since I'm going out to dinner after work on Thursday, Churchill stays home on Thursday.

I have a shirt similar to that for hiking in the desert. Works real well and is surprisingly cool. Recommended.

Got mine burnt pretty good at a PGR mission Friday. Two days applying aloe and I'm doing good now. Think I'll be wearing a long sleeve the rest of the summer though.

I wear full gear all the time, so sunburn isn't usually an issue for me. But after some longer rides on sunny days, I'll get some pink on my face, as the sun makes it way through my clear faceshield.

I just picked up a new bike on Sunday and had to ride it about 400 miles home. For once I prepared, and applied sunscreen to my face and the back of my neck before the ride.

Putting a small bottle of sunscreen in my 'essential gear' compartment on the bike is a good idea.
