I just brought home a crusty 1985 r80rt and the gas cap spins around when i turn the key. The whole cap just spins and spins, either direction. The key does nothing, but the cap stays flush. What am i doing wrong?
Aren't those the bikes with the horizontal pistons that I'm always tempted to put my FEET on, when riding? (lol).
Seriously...........did you figure out what was wrong? examine the opening and the Cap. Anything LOOK whacked out, worn or broken?
when you have the cap in your hands and turn the key in the cap, do you see any movement of any latches or anything? Any evidence that turning the key is doing ANYTHING functional to the cap?
Yes, pistons stick way out. The cap is still in the tank. I put the key in and turn it, but doing so just spins the entire cap around. The key doesn't turn the locking mechanism at all.
When I helped a friend inspect a bike his bike had one of those spinner ones to prevent gas theft. Spray something like WD40 into the keyhole to try and free up the metal that has welded its way together.
