Default 1993 Yamaha Seca II

I am looking at getting a bike and found this one on craigslist and was just wondering what you all think and if it would be a good bike to get or if the work it needs will cost more than the bike is actually worth.

It wont let me add the link to the page but here is what it says:

I have had this bike for two years never had any major issues. Starter started to go out this spring. Took it all apart and found out that it needs a need starter clutch. I don't have the time to fix it. You can find the part for about 100 bucks on any major part sites. Good project bike. The bike will still start and runs well. It has a new seat, new exhaust tips, new tires, new chain and sprockets, new paint job, and a custom head light that I put on. Bike used to be red then I painted it matte black. mileage is shown in the picture. Few dings on the tank from previous owner. I had a lot of fun fixing the bike up and never had problems with her running. Sad to see her go but I don't have to time or money. Willing to discuss reasonable prices. call or text xxx-xxx-xxxx

Its on Craiglist and if I get enough posts I will add the link.

If interested its Minnesota, Mankato and just search Seca.

This would be my first bike and I have always wanted a Yamaha R6 but for a first bike I have heard these are pretty good and get decent gas mileage too. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The 600 was a great ride. Yamaha actually did a spec racing series for them for a year or so. They make a great all around ride, from sport tourer to a capable back road burner. They are respectable in performance, but not a supersport. Should be a great bike to learn.

You may just find you really like it and not sell it off too fast. It is one of the classic "fun to ride a slower bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow" bikes. I had a similar sort in my Nighthawk S and now have a 550 that is a blast on a really winding back road. You get to "ride" more since you can run it harder than you can with the high horsepower bikes like the supersport 600s.

I'm a big fan of the Seca II; it was one of about 6-7 models on a short list of inexpensive, reliable, easy to repair/maintain bikes I created when I started shopping for my first MC. If I'd have found one before I got my Nighthawk 550 I would have jumped on it.

That being said, I'd be a bit wary on this one. Between the new paint, dents, 'replaced' headlight and missing fairing, I'd bet even money that the bike was laid down. Not to say a bike that's been crashed can't be a good deal, but I'd be paying close attention to the frame (is it straight), the engine (any obvious damage, especially on the same side as the dents), exhaust (dents, cracks), etc.
